Mine sits at 1500 - 1700rpm on a normal day when first started, but if it's really cold outside then it can be as high as 2000rpm.

You need to measure the size of the core on your current radiator before buying, as there are two different sizes. When measuring it do not include the plastic/metal end tanks or side frames.

When I bought my MR2 it didn't come with a spare wheel.

You could try the temperature sender. If this is faulty it doesn't know when to apply or shut off the choke settings.
