Re: How much would you spend? And new alternator?
I probably should've updated this earlier but hey: Alternator, 'fixed', asked them to just turn it over manually to see if it free'd up and it did (so almost definitely rust rather than bearings?), I'll do a proper dismantle/sand/paint fix when I've got it back, Oil leak was 'something' (can't remem...

Re: How much would you spend? And new alternator?
un1eash, where did you get the alternator done? or did you just buy the bearings and do it yourself? I'm hoping it's just the rust issue so it's a 'free' fix and in the short term can be temporarily fixed enough to get the car mot'd and back to my house :) It was never really run with a bad alternat...

Re: How much would you spend? And new alternator?
Yeah, not gonna be up for driving it, or even really want them idling it for too long to try and find the oil leak really, So just called them up after reading that alternator guide by Jimi and asked them to give turning the alternator pulley with a wrench a go as a temporary fix, and if that works ...

Re: How much would you spend? And new alternator?
Cheers, for the replies: Not looking to sell, well not fix then sell, had considered selling as spares and repairs but doubt it's worth anything really. If I fix then it will be to get back on the road and use as a daily driver :) I'm in the South West, the car is currently in a place called Dursley...

How much would you spend? And new alternator?
So after having my car standing (outside for a bit and then into a garage) I've moved house and now decided I need to sort the car and clearly not going to fix it myself so it's either get rid of pay a garage to fix... So took it to a local garage to have a look at it and they've just got back to me...

Re: Engine Rebuild Parts/Cost?
mk1 dal, nice pistons :o I'm fairly sure I'm gonna go replacement for speed and rebuild my current one over time (possibly/probably going a bit silly and getting cams etc), I've got some points/ban on my licence which the insurance will count for test rest of this year and another year as well, so p...

Re: Engine Rebuild Parts/Cost?
jnoiles, that does seem a very good price for a rebuild, I'll have to bookmark that at least :p Paul, I would just be looking for an engine, rather than you doing any work? But not sure what happens to any 4age's you take out when doing the crazy conversions :) I picked up my long term loan car from...

Re: Engine Rebuild Parts/Cost?
monkeymax, Cheers for the list, some things on there I hadn't thought of and very useful to have some more known prices. With the ARP bolts were the main bolts needed or just a 'nice to have'? Bender Unit, I know it'll cost more, and that it can go wrong, but it's still tempting :) The selling bit w...

Re: Engine Rebuild Parts/Cost?
Yeah, I'm fairly sure getting another engine would be cheaper (and certainly easier :p) I've kept the car for ~5 years so far, and I do love it, when I finally decided she needed a brief rest I was initially thinking of getting rid and replacing with <something else> but couldn't really think of any...

Engine Rebuild Parts/Cost?
I'm about to take my MR2 off the road due to shot piston rings and a nice oil leak that's been rapidly getting worse. Although I'm not 100% decided on keeping the MR2 yet (it's a little tired and will cost a fair bit to get back to a good condition, certainly more than it's 'worth'...) I'd like to g...

Cheers Mart, That looks like some good testing fun coming up on the weekend hopefully

Black Beast Piston, I checked all the fuses and they're all fine.

Re: Drivers Side Headlight Not Popping Up..
Well, finally had some time yesterday and tried to fix it, first I checked the top plate, but that was fine, Then I replaced the motor with a known working one, which failed to fix the problem, Then I replaced the retract control relay with a known working one, and again that failed, So Motor is fin...

Re: Drivers Side Headlight Not Popping Up..
Cheers for the replies, I wondered what that red knob was for, I set it this morning so it's fully up all the time as a temporary fix,

Thanks for the offer lion_yo, but my housemate has one that's due to be scrapped at some point so I can salvage the motor/whole unit from that one at the weekend

Drivers Side Headlight Not Popping Up..
Hi, went out to the shops in the car earlier, decided on the way back it was about time to use the lights, unfortunately only one came up, the drivers side stayed down, Got home and had a quick, completely clueless, look at it and the light itself is on, but the unit just hasn't come up and is locke...

Re: Quick Handbrake Question...
Just picked the car up now and there are two things mentioned on the fail sheet, the first is the 'parking brake efficiency' which I expected, the second that he didn't mention on the phone (although it explains why he suggested changing the calipers) is that the 'offside rear mechanical brake compo...

Re: Quick Handbrake Question...
Have you gone through the full process for resetting the handbrake mechanism? Remove caliper from pads Wind back pistons until they're fully back in the caliper Wind them back out far enough for the slot to line up with the pin on the back of the pad Put caliper back on properly Pump footbrake a fe...

Quick Handbrake Question...
Hi, I did use the search but can't quite find an answer/mention of my specific symptomns, Basically the car failed it's mot today on just an inefficient handbrake, I was expecting exhaust as well and 'possibly others' so it's better than I was expecting :D Guy at the garage has recomended new/recon ...

Re: fuel pump gone
It's quite a hefty job as the whole tank needs to be dropped to replace it, Mine had a similar problem, except it would start for 1-2 seconds before cutting out, but with some 'ez-start' sprayed into the inlet manifold it would continue to idle, lumpily. This was eventually tracked down to injector ...

Re: Arg, Smokey...
Hi, Cheers for all the replies, Just got back from the first drive in it since I posted, Tried redlining it in second and then lifting off, no noticeable smoke (tried several times), same with the lifting off whilst going downhill. I did notice a small amount of smoke but nothing major when revving ...

Re: Arg, Smokey...
I've had the vehicle for 3 years, it broke down on my when I had no money and it ended up being in the garage for a year, before really I needed to move the car (rented garage that was running out) hence the getting it fixed, It did used to 'use' a bit of oil, about a litre every 3-5k miles give or ...
