Drivers Side Headlight Not Popping Up..

Post by NoSkill »

Hi, went out to the shops in the car earlier, decided on the way back it was about time to use the lights, unfortunately only one came up, the drivers side stayed down,

Got home and had a quick, completely clueless, look at it and the light itself is on, but the unit just hasn't come up and is locked solidly down.

There's been no problems prior to this (at least with the headlights...) in the past 4 years, can the motors just fail? or is it more likely to be electrical and if so what?

I've seen both earthing and the retract control relay mentioned, but seems with both of these the lights go 'mad' rather than just one not coming up? (generally at least...)

Any idea's for me to look at?

You can put them up manually if your stuck , with the bonnet open look inside the frunk just behind the headlight and you should see a little round black plastic cover , which is covering a red knob remove the black cover buy pulling at it and then turn the red knob to raise the headlight .

Cheers for the replies, I wondered what that red knob was for, I set it this morning so it's fully up all the time as a temporary fix,

Thanks for the offer lion_yo, but my housemate has one that's due to be scrapped at some point so I can salvage the motor/whole unit from that one at the weekend :)

Just a shot in the dark but the same thing happened to me once. With mine it turned out to be the metal body coloured headlight cover lid had slid backwards, somehow, and wedged against the leading edge of the bonnet. So every time I turned the the lights on the it was stuck at the back, nearest the driver, and would not come up. Just repositioned and it worked fine again.

Well, finally had some time yesterday and tried to fix it,

first I checked the top plate, but that was fine,

Then I replaced the motor with a known working one, which failed to fix the problem,

Then I replaced the retract control relay with a known working one, and again that failed,

So Motor is fine, Relay is fine, guessing it's got to be wiring now?

Looks like there are 5 pins on the motor connector, 2 larger ones and a row of 3 smaller ones. At a guess the two larger ones are the 12v and earth connectors? whilst the bottom 3 actually control the motor in some way?

Basically how do I try to isolate the fault at this point?

Cheers Mart, That looks like some good testing fun coming up on the weekend hopefully :)

Black Beast Piston, I checked all the fuses and they're all fine.
