I just installed a set of ST165 front callipers on my MK1a but ran into two problems:
The disc isn't centered at all, it's one or two mm from the inner brake pad, and 7 or 8 from the other. Do I need a need a spacer between the disc? (I upgraded to the mk1b disc)
The brake lines are to short to connect properly to the callipers, I can connect them but then I have to stretch them a bit and they probably wont last long. If I dont clamp them to the strut there's no problem, it's the part between the clamp and the calliper that's too short. Do I need other brake lines?

Any pics?
If the distance between the calliper and the clamp is too short have you got the callipers on the right side ( e.g nipple up or nipple down
)

No pics yet but the bleed nipple is on the top of the calliper.
Re: Problems after ST165 brake upgrade
The closest rotors to what you need are ST165 celica fronts or SV21-25 camry fronts.
I went with the camry ones as they are +-0.1mm the same height as MK1b fronts. I didn't account for pad carrier thickness increase though so that's maybe why ST165 rotors might be the best fit (they sit 1.5mm closer to outer pad). So not only would 25mm rotor make it more like 1-2mm space in the inner side, but outer would be more like 4-5mm. With ST165 it could be 2.5-3.5mm inner, 2.5-3.5mm outer right? Looks like i'll need 3mm aluminium spacers (they can't be made any thinner; maybe laser/water jet cut from sheet ali) + 1.5mm shim between caliper carrier and hub My installation however is still a work in progress so I have many surprises ahead I guess.
EDIT: A little footnote. I haven't found brembo diagram for mk1b so i have nicked mk1a dimensions thinking they are the same with different diameter and thickness only. If not, all I have just written is a lie!

Code: Select all
Dia Thick Height Hub Hat ID Hat OD PCD Holes
AW11 MR2 258 22 42,1 54 131 141 100 4
Camry SV21-25 255 25 42 54 131 141 100 5
Celica ST165 255 25 40,5 54 131 141 100 5
-Height means the dimension between inner rotor friction surface (facing the inner pad) and inner hat surface (where it touches the wheel hub); so it doesn't take the hat's thickness into account

Re: Problems after ST165 brake upgrade
That is very odd as I am running ST165 calipers with standard mk1b discs with no issues what so ever...

Re: Problems after ST165 brake upgrade
Indeed, i invented this mod and have never come across this, it's usually all plug and play with Mk1B discs and hubs.
This leads me to believe the hub itself has a slightly different offset between a Mk1A and B, it's the only explanation i can think of.

Re: Problems after ST165 brake upgrade
I don't have time to work on the car this weekend but I'll try to take some pictures.
The discs I used were not new (but still good) so I'll measure them to see if they are genuine mk1b discs.
My brake lines aren't toyota originals anymore but I do have them in the basement somewhere, I'll compare them to see if the originals are longer.

Re: Problems after ST165 brake upgrade
So yeah apparently I installed the brake lines wrong, if you do it correctly they fit properly.
There's still the 3mm offset problem but this is normal it seems. Lot's of threads on mr2oc about it. Either shave 3mm of the carrier bracket or get a 3mm shim behind the disc.

Hope not! Never heard of this myself but you never know.
New wheel bearings fitted by any chance?

You can see the uncentered disc in this picture:
Re: Problems after ST165 brake upgrade
how thick spacers do you need then?
