Gota wait 2/3 wks but I think you have to go a long way to beat em. Got quoted £435 for dunlop sport 9000's in correct sizes or £380 with 205/50 fronts, all inc..

On the basis that the stock tyre for the MR2 Turbo is the Yoko A-022, and assuming they set the tyre pressures knowing the stock tyre make and model, I took the assumption that 29/33 was the optimum tyre pressure for the stock Yoko.

With this knowledge, I have been experimenting with the tyre pressures on the Toyo T1-R. Since it has mega flexi sidewalls and mega-high dry grip, I figured that more pressure wouldn't necessarily make it slippy/slidy like it would a normal tyre.

The results are pretty good actually. Moved up to 33/36 and the car is a lot more 'pointy' at the front, it doesn't take 2 goes to aim at an apex with the car wallowing like a barge (I call it the MR2 pendulum - you Toyo owners know what I mean!!), and the sliding is much more progressive, and still very good grip even at the higher pressures.

Just sharing the knowledge guys, don't assume 33/36 is good for you or safe, and I am not advising anyone to go against the Toyota manual.

I had some T1-R's on my old Rev3 Tubby, running on 17's and I found them terrible... as you say very bouncy, and I was never impressed with the handling... then when i changed them to T1-S it was so so much better!

As you say they are not exactly cheap tyres, admittedly not as expensive as Eagle F1's or P Zero Nero's but hardly a budget tyre!

I just changed from T1-R on 15" my winter wheels to 17" and the 15" did feel mushy and wollowy at the back but gripped really well in the wet.

The 245/35 R17 rears and 215/40 R17 fronts now feel much more precise and turn in well, it seems the 50 profile is just a bit too tall for the softer sidewalls

all of this begs the question:

what is the best rubber for standard wheels?

i'm on T1-Rs and they grip, but yes, a bit wallowy. what's better?

Bridgestone S-03 is the most amazing tyre for the road I ever drove on the '2.

Hands down winner, no competition IMHO

Advan Neova LTS is even better. Funny sizes mean its only suitable for mk1s running 15s though.

SO3 is a really good tyre. I prefer it over the F1. Very stiff sidewalls too. Are they still available though?

No ](*,) hence my going towards the T1-R [-(

EDIT: F1's I liked on the road and were great in the wet. Don't translate to the track. On the Mk1 I even preferred the A539 over the F1 !!!!! 539 nice and predictable for 'fun' never did anything silly other than very slowly overheat with loads of warning

My nearside eagle F1 overheated big time at llandow last year; the understeer as a result was monumental.......
Went off track, it rained a bit, then went out on damp track and they were fine again, all blistering had disappeared...

Just fitted a brand new set of Toyo T1 R's all round to the tubby. compared to the Avons that were on before, they have so much more grip in the wet and dry.

The side walls do feel a little softer than the Avons, but this gives pleanty of feedback during cornering. If Toyo's are too soft for your road use, then you are probably driving too fast and should be on a track anyway.

Regarding tyre pressures; the difference a few PSI can make is unbelievable. For me, I find running 26psi in the front (Better for high speed stability) and 34psi in the rear works well. Any deviation from this has serious consequences with regard to handling.

If you are running a MK2 MR2 Turbo with a 195 55 15 front tyre with a Toyo T1-R on it, then 26 psi will be hideously underinflated!!

I have these tyres on my car, and believe me when I say this, not only will you enjoy your car more if you inflate then to 31/32 front 34/35 rear but you will gain about 20-30 miles per tank of fuel.

The T1R is simply not designed to run at that low pressure!!!!!

I guess the alternate argument is that if you're happy.....

I tell you what, you try 32/35 tonight/tomorrow and I will try 26/34 and we can write our views up over the weekend? Costs nothing to try does it?

I here what you are saying about front pressures. I am running 205 45 16's. not sure if that makes a difference.

If I run any more than 26 in the front, the car does not feel good at high speeds. It exagerates the light front end feeling.

I have experimented with front pressures right from 34 psi down to 26 psi, and I just find that lower front pressures = better high speed stability.

32 psi feels great around town, but anything over 80mph feels awfull.

I suppose as well, we are assuming that the garage has their gauge accurately calibrated. I checked my pressures at another garage locally, and that gave an indicated reading of 2 psi higher. Not sure which one is correct, so went with the newest looking inflator.

Aaah - wider tyres, yes less PSI will be appropriate... that explains it.

So would you say 26psi (or could be 28psi depending on accuracy of gauge!) is unreasonable for that size of tyre?

As I said, I came to that pressure through experimentation, not by picking an arbitrary figure out of my head.

I would like to run a little more pressure, but things get weird at higher speeds if I do.

Having said all this, to return to the original post, i am generally pleased with the Toyo's for general road use. i guess a track day is a different story though.

Inflating them a bit more sounds good!

I have 15" wheels on mine.

And to be honest i think they could do with being harder.

I will try this as opposed to the standard 31psi.

31psi? that's not standard on the 15" rim - it's 29/34.

My suggestion with T1-R on the standard 15" sizes is 32/35 ish. Made a huge difference to me.

Also at xxxmph I still find them fine.

Just fitted 2 225/45/16s on the back of my car and i have to say they've renewed my faith in these tyres. Tons of grip when tramming down B-roads, bit more forgiving than my old Falkens i.e comfortable and less road noise.

I'll give em a proper test on the Cat and Fiddle run this weekend
