Best paint for cam covers

Hi all,

Which spray paint is best for refubishing cam covers, I was thinking of acrylic, I want to make a top job of them IE correct preparation and paint that won't lift off when the engine is run.

I did think of taking them to an alloy wheel specialist that's local but i am not sure if the paint they use is good enough.....or is that a stupid idea ?

I used Plastikote from Halfords, looks a treat seems to cope with the heat, and Humbrol brushed on to pick out the lettering.

Hammerite is heat resistant. Hybrol enamal for the letters.

Another vote for Plasticote! Sticks like xxxx to a blanket!

I did mine in satin and it still looks good - no issues with the heat. Get some nitromors on the old paint, key the surface and scrub clean with some gunk degreaser, primer, key and then paint.

I used some wet and dry to pick out the lettering.

Sorry this is OT but I see a few MK1 cars don't have the bracket hinged to the rocker cover for the throttle cable - where's it gone???

Hi Brin,

I've done a few sets of covers, I've tried various paints and I got the most consistently good results come from Eastwood 'Alumablast'. You get it from Frost Restoration. For the lettering I use Humbrol gloss enamel (airfix paint). Here's a link to Frost's, go to the paint section and look for Eastwood

Mine are done in this combination, with the spark-plug plate done in Eastwood 'Underhood black' also from frosts.

If your tempted to get them 'shot blasted' think very carefully, you have to be 100% sure all the shot is out.

Frost are only about 10miles from me (I've used them before!) and the guys there are very helpful. Not the cheapest products but good service and being reasonably local helps!!!

Can't find an 'in engine bay' shot to upload but this is how they looked after I'd done em, and to be honest they still look the same. Not too shiny, just a good flat silver.

Done with Plastikote, with Humbrol lettering
