Clutch Adjustment?

Post by Soupasam »

It may sound a bit strange but i'm having problems pulling away quickly!

My previous tyres lost traction easily under hard acceleration from a standstill. I have had Toyo Proxes for a couple of months and they dont lose traction at all as the clutch seems to be giving way before the tyres!

My first thought would be a new clutch but when I bought the car back in Janurary I made sure that a recent clutch had been fitted (I have a reciept that shows a new clutch was installed in september)

Just to clarify...I don't go racing my car everywhere and since owning the car I've only done one autocross event. :?

Has my clutch gone that quickly or does something need adjusting? Maybe a cheapo clutch?

Help is much appreciated :thumleft:

There isn't any adjustment as such for a hydraulically operated clutch. You can adjust the pedal free-play and height but that's about it.
It may be worth checking that the push rod between the pedal and master cylinder hasn't been adjusted to far out with the result that the pedal is on the stop before the clutch is fully engaged. Is your bite point high ? ie near the top end of the pedal travel ?
Black is not a colour ! .... Its the absence of colour

I shall be watching this post, as my bite point is high. I was wondering if there was any adjustment anywhere, but I have asked so many questions, and asked for so much help, I decided not to ask. I dont want to be a pain.

Thanks for the help!

My clutch doesnt slip and the bite point is quite high.. :-k I'll have a check if the actual pedal is'nt adjusted right as it may not be fully engaging as jimi said.
I try and have a looksie tomorrow and will report back!

Hmmm, I've got a similar clutch issue as well. My current MK1 is the 4th one I've driven for a long period and all have had really sweet clutch mechanisms. Except this one!

I find it very hard to get a smooth start and changing between 1st, 2nd & 3rd can be a jarring experience and I have to be so careful with my left foot as getting the timing right is very difficult. Some may say that it's down to each MK1 being different but my current car has the SAME engine and gearbox that was in my last MK1 before it died of terminal rust. And that shifted like a dream and made me look like a pro. It feels like the point at which I can feel the clutch release the gear stick from gear to go for the change is different to the point at which I can feel the bite of the clutch engaging the next gear through the clutch pedal - if that makes sense? The result is that when I press the clutch down I feel the gear stick release, shift into gear and let the clutch peddle back up while applying the gas. But the clutch doesn't feel to bite through my left foot till slightly further up and so I'm getting jerky changes, which are very difficult to time. As if the point at which the clutch pedal allows me to shift gear is completely different to the point at which it reengages the next gear. Any ideas?

If you can do it yourself, replace the clutch. How many miles has it done?

Only about 10,000 miles at the most so it's still really new. But like I say, it's the same one, gearbox engine and all, that was on my last MK1 and that shiffted like a dream.
