Hmmm, I've got a similar clutch issue as well.

My current MK1 is the 4th one I've driven for a long period and all have had really sweet clutch mechanisms.

Except this one!

I find it very hard to get a smooth start and changing between 1st, 2nd

& 3rd can be a jarring experience and I have to be so careful with my left foot as getting the timing right is very difficult.

Some may say that it's down to each MK1 being different but my current car has the SAME engine and gearbox that was in my last MK1 before it died of terminal rust.

And that shifted like a dream and made me look like a pro.

It feels like the point at which I can feel the clutch release the gear stick from gear to go for the change is different to the point at which I can feel the bite of the clutch engaging the next gear through the clutch pedal

- if that makes sense? The result is that when I press the clutch down I feel the gear stick release, shift into gear and let the clutch peddle back up while applying the gas.

But the clutch doesn't feel to bite through my left foot till slightly further up and so I'm getting jerky changes, which are very difficult to time.

As if the point at which the clutch pedal allows me to shift gear is completely different to the point at which it reengages the next gear.

Any ideas?
