Forged pistons hitting oil squirter jets?

Post by fishface »

:( Just building up a Rev2 turbo with forged rods and pistons. Put the first piston in and the strengthening web in the piston is hitting the oil squirter jet just before BDC! The pistons are JE ones. Has anybody else had any problems with these? It seems very common with Wiseco pistons judging by the results of a Google search but no mention of JE pistons or MR2s? :(

All the 3S-GTE forged pistons i've seen (and i've seen a lot of them!), have a cut out for the squirter.

Have you got them in the right way round?

I have the largest cut outs in the crown on the left as you look at it from the cambelt end which i assume is right Peter?

Do the piston skirts on the opposite sides from your oil squirters have a cut out in them?

:thumleft: Ok heres some pictures.

This shows the nozzle in relation to the piston. Its hitting the web not the actual skirt.

Piston crown, im assuming the bigger cut outs go on the inlet side?

Piston from underneath,

Interesting- I've not seen that design of skirt before...

You may need to modify your oil squirters slightly to accomodate the pistons, it looks like you've got room to rotate the nozzle round a bit and create some clearance :-k

:thumleft: This was what i was thinking and seems to be the way most of the other car types have got around it unless they blanked off the nozzles! It should just need tweaking round a bit so it misses the web! Just wanted to see if anyone else had encountered it and make sure i had the pistons in the right way round though!

:-s Apparently these look like a new design!

JE offers 2 different types of skirt designs. Full Round, and FSR.

This is the newer FSR (Forged Side Relief) skirt style. JE is slowly transitioning all of their applications over to this superior design. The FSR forging allows unmatched strength while shedding unnecessary weight through machining. In short, they are light, and strong, and they are the future of pistons.

The ones in the advert look the same as the ones we have!

:thumleft: All sorted now! Just bent the squriter jets round a few mm so they clear the webs! Got about 2mm clearance now! Thanks for the replies! :thumleft:
