I think we'll need a bit more info than that! i.e the specifications of the rims!

also suspension setup, lowered, coilovers? All makes a difference.

You do not need anything wider than a 225, just use a good tyre

sadly there isn't much for 17's on 225 that fit the front of MR2's 225x45 wont fit stock suspension without some er modifcation to the spring cup

You don't get much understeer at all from 215 fronts. I guess it all comes down to front-rear balance.

What width and offset are the wheels?

Any recommendations Bob? For a road car at least? Is it a no no to have differing makes on the front and rears?

Don't think they will clear the spring cups as my 215/40/17's on 8" rims are close.

235/40/17 fits under the spring cup (barely) and has been done on an 8" width wheel by quite a number of people already. I've not heard/read of anyone getting wider than that on stock arches. HTH

Works with a mixture of the right offset and a lump hammer on the strut tube me thinks.

Doesn't this rub on the arch liner when on full lock and full spring compression?
With a et35 offset I'd assume you'd need a 10mm spacer to fit 235s but then I'd imagine the arches would need flaring. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong as this is what I worked out for my new rims.

235/40 is the size i had in mind, i am using 215/45 atm with loads of clearance on an 8J rim. I just need some more grip up front to compliment the 4-pot calipers i have on there. I am considering some R1R's on the front and the rears will be r888 275/40/17 -i know these will not fit the arches however i have intent on fitting arch flares soon. suspension btw is tien ype- flex.

Re: Front tyre sizes, max width on 17's?
Original vs. 215/40/17:
215/45/17 vs. 235/40/17:
OEM is 595mm tall, so both of these are quite a long way out really. The 215/40/17 is closer to stock size but that isn't one you've chosen. Personally I'd recommend that, as my own tyre choice! To put it in perspective, 195/55/15s vs. 235/40/17s...
Do you really need 235mm of rubber? 235/35/17s would be only 1mm larger in total diameter, so they would be nice, but finding quality tyres that size...
