Can you set up a boost controller with the car up on stands?

I have no MOT on my car as it's not quite finished yet, but I have an HKS EVC IV plumbed in. I have to drive the car somewhere I can floor it and redline it for the unit to learn the car's boost curve before I can set it up.

Now, my only opportunity to do this will be on the way to the MOT next week. Unless of course, I can do this while it's up on stands still? I don't see why I couldn't, but I'm concerned that with no weight on the wheels, the car won't work as hard to get to redline. Would this affect the boost? Has anybody done it this way before?

i would imagine it wouldnt work the same as the car wouldnt be under load, i would wait

Until it rocks off the axle stands and catapults you into the house/garage/car parked in front. If all you need to do is redline it why not wait till you are on the way to the mot. Or wait and fit it after you are road legal.

No. The car wont make boost with the wheels just spinning in the air, no load on the engine.

just turn the EBC off and run actuator pressure till its mot'd!

not exactly hard to work this out surely.


if you want to get out all the crap from the engine before it gets near the probe for the emissions test, just do a couple of pulls on actuator pressure.

there is no need what so ever to setup the boost controller for a MOT!

I know it's not needed for MOT. Just didn't know if it would be better to have it set up before driving it any distance.

just turn it off until the car passes everything.

then when your sure car is 100%, then have a mess around with the ebc.

I'd be very careful about trying this. All the workshop manuals I have and DIY books are usually pretty clear to never run a car in gear when it's jacked up.

Just think what would happen if there was a "shake" somewhere and the car would come down. I'm not sure whether I'd want to be seat belted in the drivers seat wearing a crash helmet or standing 20 yards behind it out of harms way. "Hit the road running" to coin a phrase.

I don't think it's safe at all.

If you were to contamplate it though I think you'd need to be sure that the wheels were jacked up to the same level as they would be on the road as your U/J's on the drive shafts would take a hammering turning when the wheels were dropped (just my take on it -maybe they wouldn't).

Just my 2p worth -I'm sure it's been done before and folk got away with it but it would be a major dooh moment and some explaining to your insurers if something did happen.

Reading this thread I couldnt help thinking of the Ferris Bueller's Day Off, with the ferrari running in reverse sat on axle stands.

Seriously though with no load on the engine in dont think it will make boost.

Yes thats the way to do it. Up on stands with the hand brake on, loads of boost.
