Jack the car at the front and rear so its completely level thats really important. Car should be cold, put the heaters to warm and undo the radiator bleed point, any air should come out. Attach service hoses and top up as necessary. hth

Sorry to jump on this post but didnt want to start another!

I (stupidly) forgot to re-secure by toolkit after jump-starting my car last weekend...

after a while of driving i go round a roundablut and there is a bang!.... toolkit went accross under the bonet from near the drivers side and ended up on th spare wheel, and almost striaght away the temp gauge started playing silly buggers!

are there coolent pipes in the front under the bonet?

i was thinking this could have caused a air lock?

anyway the car runs fine, then the gauge will creep up the all of a sudden shoot back down to a quarter and then settle.....

and i did get the "kettle" whistle at one point.

there is no cream on the underside of the oil cap so i`m hoping its just a air lock!

thing is, i`ve read the writ-ups on how to get the air lock out, but my mechanical knowledge is VERY limited!

when it says "with the engine COLD put the heater on HOT" does this mean with the enging switched off?

also i read that i have to put the service pipes on and tie up the ends of each pipe???????

I`m realy sorry if these questions have been asked bedore, but i want to make sure i understand fully what i`m doing before I get stuck, OR do more damage!

Thanks

It could be one of a number of things but an air lock is unlikely to happen unless you have a leak or you've just refilled the system. You'll need to find the leak before bothering with too much else I'm afraid and the cooling system on the MR2 is a bit complex.

Your best bet is to get it filled up using the steps in the link above then take it to someone who's done it before. The service hoses are just lengths of clear plastic tubing that may or may not be tied up behind the plastic shroud in the frunk of your car. If not, some windscreen washer tubing from somewhere like Halfords will do the trick.

Once you have it full, try to find the leak - and then get it to a decent garage that knows MR2s. Toyota will fleece you so a good specialist is probably your best bet. 3S near Fleet (check the Affiliates section) are probably the closest to you and come recommended by many. Any competent mechanic with the pages linked above will be able to help, though, if you have someone you'd trust.
