Roll cage (help please) shall i get one or not????

Post by 2barGee »

I am doing lots of track days this year, now do you think its worth while getting a roll cage fitted??

I still use my car on the road so its not totally stripped out.

How much do they weigh in at??

Also can they easily be fitted??

Let me know what you think

Cheers dan

I had one in mine, made me feel a fair bit safer especially when I saw the results of a friends Supra that was rolled and he was very lucky to get out.
My interior was not stripped out either, cage weights vary but will probably add 20kgs+. I would try and fit one with out or with removable door bars if you’re using it on the road also.

Dan, whatever you do check that your insurance company will cover it.. a lot of insurers will not .
If you can't see the angle, you're in trouble.

safety first so i think you should get one, however once you have it you could cut and weld plates on to certain areas that would allow you to remove it with the help of a spanner, that way you can remove it for normal road use :-k

just a thought as they could become a hindrance on the road :thumleft:

Dont worry about the above for the time being.. wait until you see how the quote comes out including the cage.

From an insurance perspective.. cars with roll cages suffer from a higher claims loss ratio than cars with out cages.. this means higher premiums. Also, claims from cars with roll cages generally cost a lot more.. a couple of reasons: The cage spreads the crash throughout the chassis so causes more damage.. also personal injury claims are higer as people bang their heads on the cage.

Make more sense now?

Yeh i will get a quote with and without it mate. I used to work for Tesco's and they put the premium loads for each individual mod

I guess a bolt in and out one might be the way forward, then just bolt it in b4 a track day :-k

To install a roll cage properly (ie to MSA standards) then you'll need to weld mounts into the car and then bolt the cage to that. Be prepared to spend around an hour and a half to two hours to remove a cage on your own and about the same to re-install it. Don't forget the seats will need to come out to give you room.

For track use a cage adds a lot of chassis rigidity that you didn't even realise was lacking from the car. Coupled with a race seat and harness you'll feel connected to the car in a way that you never have before. It also adds to increased confidence in your personal safety - I feel very exposed now driving a normal car on a track day - but never lose sight of that fact that if the roll cage has come into play for safety reasons, you're going to be look at a big repair bill for your car...

The P&P cage that we supply for the MR2 Championship is easily the best off-the-shelf roll cage for the mk2 MR2, and fits surprisingly well around a good amount of the interior trim. We spec'd the cage with no compromises on safety - that is after all it's primary function - so you have to cut the dashboard to install it. There are insurance companies that specialise in policies for road cars that are also used for Motorsport, and will also cover you for events. Give Sky a try first, but if you struggle drop me a line and I'll send you some links.

roll cage

I have a ROGUE rollcage fitted to my track car. It all fits very snug with suitable padding is not too intrusive to cabin space. Can be trisky to get in and out initially but you soon get use to it. aS Patrick said make the feel more planted. You know where I live come and try it for size. Pm me if interested I'm out of the country all next week.

Richard Egger insurance is one of the best for this.

My MR2 insured to £10,000 all mods declared fully comp is £900 a year - the car must be used for competitions (track days?) and MUST have a roll cage.... i believe there is also a motorsport license thing but not sure if you need one or not.

Give them a call and ask to speak to Alison - 0115 985 0165 :thumleft:

I was explaining, in general, why cars with roll cages suffer from higher premiums.. my answer was not Sky Insurance specific.
