[Mk2] [NA] Question for *3SFE owners* (don't laugh!!!)

Quick question regarding my 3SFE winter run about: It doesnt seem to want to rev much at all. It gets to around 5k rpm and is really labouring, is this normal? Ive no idea if the car has a rev limiter (i dont tend to thrash my cars to destruction but would be nice to know if there's something wrong!) or not as it simply struggles to go past 5000rpm. I know these aint the quickest cars but if theres a problem, id like to sort it.

dont know much about them where does it redline on them ones. i know on mine it is very quick up top end opposed to lower down it comes to life. i nearly bought one of those till i asked on here and was told stay away from it 119 bhp opposed to 158bhp well happy with my uk spec n/a

yeah im aware of all that, i own a tubby too! its just a winter run about to save the tubby gettin covered in the winter road salt and other rubbish.

it just seems a bit odd how the car refuses to rev any further- its similar to riding a 2-stroke motorbike; rev it hard through the rev range and it effectively 'self limits' as the carburettor cannot provide any more fuel- effectively fuel starvation provides the limiter.

a simple 'yey or ney' from another 3SFE owner would be spot on!!!

A rev limiter would give you a much harder 'cut' rather than just labouring.
Is the electrical system in good order? - Plugs, leads, dizzy cap & rotor arm are all worth changing as part of service - weak spark can cause more problems higher up in the rev range. Pretty sure the FE can do more than 5k!

Update, its using rather a lot of oil. Travelled approx 200 miles down the motorway and its used around 3/4 of a litre of oil. Could oil in the combustion chamber be causing this reluctance to rev? Ive got the service manual on CD, im sure there is a section in there about checking the resistance of the HT leads and so on. Its had new plugs- might be worth checking the coil/ignitor etc??

Its done 151,000 miles and it would appear its on the original HT leads!

Anyone know any good links for cheap electrical spares??

If its used 3/4 of a liter o' oil in 200 miles I think you have more of a problem than just your HT leads.
What are your plugs like? Be worth getting a thorough check to find out where that oils gone though and yes oil in the combustion chamber would give you that hesitation

Only the very early ones were 3SFE.

nope heres mine couldnt resist a few pics of her either, not that many uk cars around i mostly looked at imports this came up for good money so thought why not the rest is history
