[Mk2] [NA] oil leaks!!

Post by ANT »

since getting my new rev 2 n/a i've had a few teething problems

noticed almost immediately that there was a little patch of oil under it when parked up. the rocker gasket was leaking quite bad and the sump seemed to have a large amount of oil around the bottom.

changed the rocker gasket yesterday and now the puddles under the car seem worse after having it running earlier

i'm assuming that the sump gasket (seal) needs doing too

could it be because there is no release for the oil around the rocker cover, more oil is making its way from the sump ? :-k

just a bit concerning as i spent a good 4 hours yesterday doing the cam cover gasket and now its worse! ](*,)

also how hard a job is it to remove the sump and replace the sealant?
i'll most likely drop it into a mates garage next week as sure it will be easier on a ramp.

also there is no real other areas oil could be coming from right ?

so you had a leak on your car, you thought it was the rocker gasket, you changed it, now its leaking more??

and you think its the sump sealent suddenly got worse???

Personally i would have thought you have not done the rocker seal properly,

did you jsut use the seal or did you use some black sealent on there too??

there was dripping and a large amount of oil on and around the bottom of the sump before i changed the rocker gasket

i'm probably over exagerating the problem now as i was hopeful that the rocker gasket change would stop all leaks.. but hey-ho

dropping it into a friends garage on saturday with new oil and filter. going to ask them to investigate the leak and if it is the sump, renew the sealant and give it a quick oil change.

i'd imagine identifying the problem will be a whole lot easier with the car up in the air.

hopefully i can then get back to enjoying the mr2 drive..

WHen you put the new gasket on did you use any sealant in the corners - on a toyota engine i did recently there a certain points that you must put a small bead of RTV sealant, so having just the gasket is not enough.

yes i did use sealant as well as the gasket

to ensure the gasket stayed in place when fitting as well as making the bond stronger
