Post by mazzerdod »

Hi All,

I,ve just bought an ARC intercooler for my rev 3 turbo has anyone else got one of these units, are they ok and how do they compare to others on the market?

I've tried searching for my answer but I find it difficult to find a specific topic, cheers!!

You mean one of these.

Excellent piece of kit.

The ARC replacement filters are very expensive but you can use a Pipercross panel filter for an RX7. Should cost around £40.

Alternatively K&N also make a panel filter for RX7. Same size as Pipercross item. Cost around £50.

Yes very good ARC induction kit the best!

They create a forced pressure..etc...to ram air in with the added

advantage of cooling alloy box...all good!

Although here is an example of the ARC Intercooler, but painted with
a sort of matt-heatshield emulsion?

Normaly alloy silver :thumleft:

ARC intercooler - at one point only mod I had on my rev3 turbo and it dynoed at a healthy 270bhp. So I believe they add a bit. :thumleft:

I also have an ARC I/C.....its one of my favourite mods :D

You gotta love proper jap tuning parts, its even better when they cost an arm and a leg new..i think the ARC one is ~£1k from ARC in japan :thumleft:

It also fits very nicely in the stock location.

LOVE IT  8)

this was also RR at engine advantages tho wasnt it  every stock engine and modded car on those days had extremely exaggerated flywheel figures......

ARC is a good ic, and rare to get hold off, because of that reason, hard to compare to others...but tbh, any ic is going to be better than the standard interwarmer....

I think the ARC IC is the worst one you can get. Personally. The only thing better than stock is the end tanks.

The depth is the same, as when you install is you leave the crappy plastic shroud in place. The surface area is the same, and the design is the same!

I'd stick with the stock one  :-#

Thanks for all the feedback its mostly good and to use Jimgts's words its bound to be an improvement over the standard interwarmer!!!

Its terrible now the weathers getting warmer you can REALLY notice the car holding back underboost when its a really hot day!!!

Yet early morning/late evening is great!!!

I only bought the ARC intercooler because it was cheap and a quick fix what I really want is a cc setup but like most after paying the bills I'm left with a pocket full of change!!!

I want to build my own cc kit if possible I like engineering things and I've already bought a 125 moped radiator with intigrated fan and 22mm outlets and there are charge coolers on Ebay as detailed below which would hopefully fit in the stock intercooler location I'm yet to measure to be sure!!! But the boost inlet/outlet locations would almost fall inline with the standard intercooler piping if I attached 90 degree elbows on the charcooler unit!!!

THSCRG-001

The THSCRG-001 charge coolers are ideal for applications where space limitations for intercooler piping are a concern. The charge cooler is placed in the engine bay and boost pipes are connected from the turbo and to the throttle body/carburettor. This way the boost pipes will be very short helping to reduce the volume of air in the intake system which will in turn keep turbo lag down. The charge cooler is then plumbed to an extra radiator located at the front of the car. The water is pumped around by a high flow rate electric water pump. (See pic)

Specifications

Volume 37440 cm2

Core size = 260 x 120 x 120 mm

Boost Inlet/Outlet diameter = 76mm

Water Inlet/Outlet diameter 20mm

Core construction = Plate and Bar

Tested to 5 Bar

Cast aluminium end tanks

Base Polish

Suitable for applications up to 500bhp

I'm still researching and will obviously need to check if the rad I've bought will offer suffiecent cooling, what flow rate will be required to suit the aforementioned charge cooler etc etc we will see?

think carefully depending on what your aims/requirements are.

Had one on for ages while I was in my 'it's a good jap brand so it must be a good part' mindset. I've learnt since then and you have to take each part on it's individual merit. Just because ARC do make some great IC's and rads for certain vehicle applications, it doesn't mean they are all great.

The ARC IC for the MR2 is only a good idea if you want to fit something that utlises the stock mounting points and set up with the minor benefit of a hardpipe kit.

I never fully realised much benefit from my ARC, even with a Power FC and other bolt on breathing mods. However, as soon as I switched to a RadTec CC instead I jumped straight to 302 hp at the hubs, previously 250 using the ARC. That speaks for itself.

By all means go for it if you want it - it is built fantastically well, just don't expect miraculous increases - my experience was that they never surfaced.

good luck!

Good comment along with common sense too :thumleft:

An ARC used I/C might be picked up for for£1-150(used) a RadTec CC with fitting perhaps around the 1k range-good up to may be 550 bhp?

A stock I/C-ARC may be around the max.3-350bhp?

The RadTec CC is the Rolls Royce of cooling

Yea a charge cooler would be the way to go but they are costly if you haven't got the cash to pay for one :(

I bought the rev 3 few months ago and she was standard with a blown turbo that cost me £650 to put right inc an engine service been spending a couple of hundred each month since but its slow progress

Why oh why can't I win the lottery and spend thousands with T B Develpoments etc!!!
