Ok...so what's my car up to then?

Post by nightSpirit »

Bloody cars...

Just got it back from MOT which it passed, electrics now work...dodgy relay. My SSQV turned up the other day (I had one a few years back..and this new one is different...it sits at an angle..and has no adjustable bolt on the back for the pistons) so I fitted it, took about 10 minutes. Set off, car seemed fine..slight hiccup/misfire once or twice in 3rd then it was ok.

Gave it some boost on dual carriageway, and it was perfect...nice and quick) although the wastegate chatter I had seems to have gone, now the SSQV just flutters alot (used to run the standard recirc to atmos). So I start driving home, give it some throttle again, all of 3rd to about 7k revs and a bit of 4th..fine. Pull up at the lights and although it wasn't spluttering, or idling roughly..it sounded like a subaru...so I set off, still sounding like a subaru (misfire?) and then it clears as I go into second...then with throttle again, same thing when any fair ammount of boost is reached. Then I limp home with it doing a few more hiccups.

So....

I get home, take the shopping in (although most of it was mush in the boot)..reset the ECU with the old fuse trick..notice the avc-r was on A setting (1.2 bar) not B (1.6) not driven much on A really...take it out again and idling was fine, up hill in 3rd with not much boost was fine, infact all conditions seemed fine. On the way home, I took it up to 1.54bar and it went like a train, smooth as anything..then idled fine etc.

No smoke at any point or anything...so what's that all about then? ECU learning the SSQV? AVC-R A setting xxxxx up?...here are the readings from the Power FC and AVC-R (Nod????)

inj duty : 75.3 %
Ign timing : 51 deg
Pim volt : 3924 ??
eng rev : 670(or 8)7 rpm
speed : 147 kph
boost : 1.54 bar
knock : 58
water temp : 82 deg

AVC-R

boost : 1.52
revs : 6756
throttle : 75.7% (hey it's raining)

Paul, the AFM is gone yes...remember when my old one broke, not good running 100% fuel.

Merlin, I wasn't either?...it came from a good source out in Japan, it's the real thing that's for sure, but the adjuster is gone..and it now has a hks badge on the casing too (aswell as the optional sticker). The box says it's for 89-99 SW20 etc...so who knows?

Have you tried putting the old BOV back and seeing if that makes any difference ? Have you had the engine check light flash at all (and make sure the bulb hasn't blown at ignition on) ? Remember it was cold weather when we mapped it, it would be well worth you coming back and letting us give it the once over now the weather is warming up as it seems to log 58 on the knock quite frequently (not a total disaster but worth looking into). I know this could be a transient echo as the PFC only logs peak but better to be safe than sorry and it's free.

If you have KV-85's HT's this could be an area worth looking at as the seal on the dizzy end seem to allow damp in and this can cause a misfire under boost as the car warms up.

Check your plugs, cap and rotor for condition, check also that the boot is not full of moisture as the PFC is quite unprotected in there and they don't seal them up anything like as water tight as what Toyota do.

If the BOV has HKS embossed into it, it's a fake. They only make them with the yellow HKS logo silk screened onto the body. Fake equals poo, and may well be the root cause of this intermittent issue.

And it's free.......being nosy but why is that Nod? I have also noticed my own hitting higher levels since things have warmed up! :(

I'm not sure I understand the question, why is it free or why does the knock count go up with IAT ?

It's free because it's a check and tweek, not a remap. The reason knock thresholds can change with higher air temp is any raise in ambient get a direct translation to EGT and combustion temp. The PFC has limited ignition spark timing compensations for air temp (unlike say a AEM which has trims for just about everything) and NO closed loop knock retard facility (like the OEM, Link, AEM & MoTec ECU's). It may be nothing but on a car that makes the sort of power this one does I would urge on the side of saftey.

I was basically asking if the free side of things also applied to myself since i'm too experiences slightly higher levels of knock since the ambient temps have climbed :?: But it was also good to learn a little more about the PFC in the process

As long as the car hasn't changed spec from what it was when it was mapped then yes it's a free tweek. It's just a road test with the laptop and the det cans just to make sure all is still within safe parameters. Obviously the Link which we will be pushing soon has closed loop det control and wide band lambda input (AEM Gauge or TechEdge) for self learning and self optimising so this sort of thing is less of a problem.

Hi all!

Right,

The SSQV is genuine, no question about that (honest)...original seald box, instructions, fitting kit...and the HKS logo is embossed onto the body so it must be a new design. I had a look at my leads (magnecor 'pop-offs' as I like to call them) and sure enough on the 1st lead (all others were dry and fine) there was traces of water droplets on the stem and round the head/plug head...I removed the plug and it hasn't failed, looked like clean burn on the tip etc, so I cleaned it and put it back in, then made sure the lead was on tight..as they have a tendancy to pop-off...I can only assume as there were traces of water on the rogue fan lid that some water had got through to that area when it's rained...the lead wasn't on right...and water had got in (I hope). Drove it for over 50 miles on saturday at all boost levels etc and it was completely fine, knock was reaching around 53? and it was the warmest day of the year so far....

sound about right? hope so...I will pop down when I get chance one weekend if that's ok..do I have to book in? or can I just pop over...still need my blitz filter back! (hope you still have it).

You can come down most times for this quick road test and saftey check, just give us a bell first to make sure we are not up to our eye balls in cars (Like now :D).

Of course we still have your SUS. It's in the cubboard safe and sound ready for you to take away when you pop in.
