Starting mods for a tubby

Post by sid1789 »

Had my tubby for 3 months now and think its time to do a few mods. What I'd like to know is what, in which order etc.. I should get these done (bear in mind I'm an IT geek not a mechanic so will be having all this fitted by a pro).

EBC - Apexi AVC-R?
Decat Pipe - No Idea at all about these, I have LegalisR Twin exhaust
Induction Kit - Pretty sure I have an HKS fitted already but not sure, I hear Apexi is fairly good
Blow Off Valve - A loud one!?
Uprated Intercooler - No idea about these either
Dastek Unichip?

Any help, ideas etc much appreciated. [-o<

Hi mate.

I knew it wouldnt be too long before the mod bug bit!

Avcr or Blitz both very good.
Decat - best for price and performance = rogue.
Apexi - definately.
Blitz dump valve.
Chargecooler - best for money and performance
Dont do the unichip. We can advance your timing and turn up your boost, what we cant do is lean out your fuel slightly, if you want to go the whole hog then a standalone ecu is the way forward.

3S

OOPs the order!
1)Chargecooler or intercooler, offer more hp by cooling the intake temps
2)Downpipe/decat and intake.
3)Boost controller
4)pssshhhhhhht thang

This will see you to good hp figures, then you can rethink the needs for more mods.

I'd go for the mods in this order

Apex-i Induction Kit (Leave the HKS on if you have one, however I have the Apex-i and its the best one I've tried)

Apexi AVC-R (Good piece of kit, probably one of the better EBC out there, other options are the HKS EBC, Blitz, GReddy)

Decat Pipe (Top mod but be careful which one you get, mine came with the GReddy turbo so can't say which one to get)

HKS Blow Off Valve

GReddy or Spearco Intercooler and Spal fan (I have this setup far better than the standard stuff)

Dastek Unichip or go for a Apex-i Power FC (as these aren't too expensive any more and are v.good)

Just my opinion mind.

P.S there's more than just yourself, around here.... who's an IT geek :-)

Forget the order, save up and do them all at once.

Induction kit (apexi)
Decat (Aussie or similar)
Exhaust (take your pick)
CC (Speak to 3s)
Boost increase. (Blitz or Greddy)
Also some uprated BOV(recirc so HKS)

The basics basically.

Its worth adding that the method to which you get to your hp goals is important as the clever dude realises he wants to reach 350 for example and does the following.

Firstly adds mods for 380hp so he isnt extracting every last bit out of his engine.
Secondly does the cooling and ignition mods before turning up to monster boost.
Thirdly services his car for longivity.

The chav on the other hand, buys boost mods to reach 1500hp and turns it up with no consideration for what is about to happen to his engine.

So given that you already prepared a list of mods you like the idea of, i say do the mods in the reverse order to what most people do, ie cooling first, boost last, rather than boost first, cooling last, this will ensure you keep the health in check whilst going through the mod list. (this is what i started on my 3rd tubby, a nice rev3 with very healthy engine).

Just my 2ps worth mate.

Cheers guys. Already had a full service, cambelt change etc... done at 3S in order to get a good starting point. The exhaust I've got I think is good enough to keep (LegalisR). I tend to play safe hence the Chav option does not appeal, I'd rather get things in place first (i.e cc etc..) then work on the boost increase. So am more than happy with the reverse order idea. But then again might buy the whole lot in one go and get it all done at once :D

I can reccomend the ST205 CC! Its a fantastic mod! The list of mods reccomended to you will totally transform the performance of your car! I cant imagine going back to a standard tubby now. Oh and youll be in good hands if you use 3S. They fitted my CC, downpipe and CT20b and done a fantastic job for a fantastic price! :D
