Discussion and technical advice the SW20 MR2. 3S-GTE, 3S-GE, 3S-FE etc
Anything and everything to do with maintenance, modifications and electrical is in here for the Mk2.
Sooo today the car started running funny and after investigation found the turbo has excessive shaft play..
What do you think? New turbo? Standard or updated? Hybrid? Or get the old one fixed. And where is best?
sorry peeps, well being in the mr2 forum it's a mr2, obviously a turbo and it's a mk2.
Mods are :-
De -cat
Performance air filter
HKS FCD
Manual boost controller
And I believe that's it engine side.
As for what I want from the car....well cost is more of the issue as it's the daily driver so what ever is most economical.
Cheers
Which mk2 rev do you have?
Revision 1 (12/1989 to 11/1991)
Revision 2 (12/1991 to 11/1993)
Revision 3 (11/1993 to 06/1996)
Rev1 Tubby, Garrett GT3071R, Motec M4 EMS, 880cc delphis, Rev3 turbo port polished built head/cams/titanium retainers, shim under buckets, HD springs, etc., rear bumper mounted intercooler, and vanilla air freshener.
Well, this would generally imply you have a rev1 or rev2. Therefore I expect you have a CT26 turbo that has let go. A replacement CT26 is the easy a cheapest option. A CT20b conversion is a nice mild upgrade while maintaining OEM parts and is probably the option I'd suggest for you as the cost is still relatively low.

Where do you guys get new turbos from? I've found Fensport to give a good deal, as they'll give you £150 for your old turbo. So £480 for a reconditioned/new CT26. Good or bad?
