[Mk2] [Turbo] HELP Lost 50% Of My Lights!!

Post by PUG_2_MR2 »

My plan today was really to adjusts my offside window as it has started slipping and my carpets are getting wet...long story short the motor has ripped it's self out of it's position and I think I'll need a new door...

But while at it I had a UK rear fog light switch that I wanted to swap out for an aftermarket type.

The aftermarket rear fog light switch has 3 wires, one is wired to the ignition, one is bridged with the front fog switch and the last goes to the rear fog light.

The UK rear switch has 4 wires but essentially it looks like 3...

Anyway I unplugged the aftermarket rear fog switch and temporarily wired the UK rear switch.

It worked perfect even glowed green when on.

Next I had to strip the rear fog switch wires of their clips, that's when I got a spark and I lost:

Park/Side Lights
Front Fogs (including dash symbol)
Rear Fog (including the light on switch)
Tail Lights

But I still have:

Dipped/Main
All Turn Signals
Brake
Reverse

I checked the fuses but all were ok especially the Front Fog. Checked online for similar issues but nothing that could help...not really into electrics.

Really not sure WTF happened.

I must mention, I did work on it with the ignition was on...as my alarm is a real pain in the ass and it has been f**king with me ever since I got the car and kills my battery every time as I can't remove the key unless I disconnect the battery even for a simple task...

Anyway need help/advise on what could have happened.

I had the switch off many times before without issues but this time it didn't like it.

If you require more info on the car I will post.

Sounds like you blew the TAIL fuse. It's fuse 1 in the fuse box in the driver's footwell. Bit of a PITA to get to.

Damn, can't believe I missed that one! Thank you Sir!

Didn't have time to do much to it this week but will check it out tomorrow as I have an idea now.

Little off topic, how common is it for the window motor to just rip out of the door?? :|

My 2 is parked in the street as I don't have the luxury of a roof over it and it's soaking inside......I will hopefully put an and to it tomorrow by welding a washer...but seriously does this happen often?

Could be a rear quarter window leak but this 'wet floor' only happened after I changed my drivers door to a JDM as the old one was a UK and rusted to f**k.

Hmm whats the cause?
My one ripped out 2 of the bracket ends so I used the 2 existing holes and welded a penny washer and used loctite on it. I was finally able to adjust the window to seal properly.

shinny, thanks again for pointing me in the right direction I thought there was only 2 fuse boxes.

Question about Fog Light Switches:

They have a Green LED, my JDM Front Fog Switch doesn't light up, only the dash will, which I thought was normal.
When I initially wired the UK Rear Fog Light Switch before the fuse blew, it glowed Green when on, just like an after market - Red in my case.
After messing around with fuse changes and wiring the Green light no longer works. All switches work like before, just no Green LED on UK switch.

I tried the aftermarket one again and it lit Red...do you think I blew the Green LED on the UK Rear Fog Switch?
