[Mk2] [NA] Quad light mod problem - help

Post by lufcraigyg »

Anyone here done the quad light mod before? just noticed a problem with my rev1 uk clusters.

When the lights are on all four lights illuminate as they should, but with brake pressed i have no brake light in the inner drivers fog. I checked the bulbs & swapped with passenger inner fog but still no change, they are both dual filament bulbs. However I did notice the wiring differed between passenger inner & drivers inner bulb holders.

I didn't install the mod & ive never done it before so i am unsure as to what to look for.

Thanks in advance

Firstly, get us a pic it speaks a thousand words.

Secondly, check to ensure you're using a bulb holder with 3 tails (worth asking).

Then check the diodes are fitted the correct way around. They're uni directional so power will only flow one way.

Get back to us and let us know.

There were no diodes that's for sure, just spade connectors in the wiring on the passenger side inner fog. Also with fog switch on i don't have fog lights, so guess i need to see whats on the end of the switch :-k

I'll get some picks up tomorrow & update.

That I would think is the problem, diodes only allow electrical flow in 1 direction and prevent the circuit from being made elsewhere and bypassing the fog light.

What you need to do is to install a diode with the flow facing the light fitting on the Fog Live (green with orange stripe wire) and another from the Brake Live (Green with white stripe) where is connects the two - which is added as part of the mod. This one needs the flow facing from brake to fog.

The diagram here shows what Im talking about.

EDIT on the last picture it looks as if there are only 2 wires on the LH light, is this correct?

Another update, i spoke to the previous owner who said that he had not in fact done a quad mod on the lights, & the connectors you see on the drivers fog were for faulty wiring.

Well now i am confused because as i understand it only the outer lights should work as driving lights & brake lights in uk clusters correct?

Correct Craig :?

If you do the mod then all 4 light up as sidelights and brake lights and the fog lights should also come on when switched (in place of the inner driving light) but the brake should still work on the inner lights.

It sounds a bit dodgy to me and worth getting someone to check out the existing wiring before you continue, it seems to me there is a short circuit somewhere.

Cos its lighting up the wrong/both filament. This is easy, and you don't need any diodes.

10 minutes with a multimeter and a soldering iron.
