Interesting Calum, I had planned to buy 235/40 fronts, as my wheels have come from a Skyline and are supplied with 255/40 rears (et40) with good rubber. I wanted to keep the 20mm tyre offset, however, this looks as if 215s would be far better.

I was talking to Kayjay0_7 last week andmentioned this and he has actually used 215s front and 255s rear without issue.

You will probably get understeer with equally sticky front/rears with 215 up front and 255 rear, but you can never say for sure til you try it!

You could certainly run 245 rears and 215 fronts, or 225 fronts. In all my configurations I've found 30mm stagger works nicely. Although someone will probably shout at me for it, I quite like different brands front to back, afterall, the tyres are supposed to do different things...

Current set up is Michelin CS on the rear, 245/40/17, and Bridgestone Potenzas on the front, 215/40/17.

IMO for best handling go a double stagger.

16x7 on front. 205/45R16 and 17x8.5 rear, 245/40R17.

235/40 is the size i had in mind, i am using 215/45 atm with loads of clearance on an 8J rim. I just need some more grip up front to compliment the 4-pot calipers i have on there. I am considering some R1R's on the front and the rears will be r888 275/40/17 -i know these will not fit the arches however i have intent on fitting arch flares soon. suspension btw is tien ype- flex.

Just because it is wider it does not mean you will get more grip under braking, in fact you may get less as the wider the tyre the less weight per inch of rubber on the road.

Go back to stock brakes with Porterfield pads and problem solved

Well said, Bob  This is why I wanted 215s.

I think in the end I may have to fork out for 4 new pieces of rubber. #-o

There isn't much on an MR2 you can spend money on that's worth more :thumleft:

imo you do gain grip from wider front tyres but you loose agility. need to find the perfect balance

215/45/17 on 17x8 et35 doesn't fit. Hits spring cup and inner arch. Back to drawing board ](*,)

Mr2s on 17" wheels, especially if lowered = use 40 profile not 45. 45 is bigger than stock rolling radius anyway so not only does it rub, on the rear the speedo will be out regardless of the tire thickness you use. 245/45/17 for example will fit a skyline but won't even roll on a lowered 2. On the front obviously no speedo implications, but still 40 profile is correct :thumleft:

I needed 45 profile front to match up with wider 40 rears, using 40's at front is going to look odd so I may run a square setup

So you are only doing it for looks not for the best handling and grip?

215/40s on a 7.5J shouldn't be that much of a stretch! Mind you manufacturers are all different. Mine seem pretty much straight on, no stretch, I don't go for that faggotry
