[Mk2] [NA] Engine Rattle? New part recommendations?

Post by Zogbee »

Hey guys, quite a big problem i think i've got here. Did a high speed run on the motorway and revving quite high up.
After returning home i noticed a rather loud rattling noise. And it's coming from inside the engine block.
Im guessing conrod or camshaft damage? That's my guess.
Any help would be greatly apprceiated. Also any good websites to buy replacements?
Import rev 2 3sge.

Many thanks

Is it still running? If it is get a mechanic to have a listen and see if it's terminal.

If something has gone internally then the cheapest option would be an engine swap.

Yep still drives fine but with a rattle that starts from 3krpm.
Hopefully getting one to look at it tomorrow.
Wouldn't it be easier to, say change the camshafts if there are the problem?
Thanks for the quick response btw. :)

It really depends what has happened, but if something has broken on the valve train, inside the cylinder or crank case then it'll have left a nasty mess inside and the engine will be junk.

Ah I see. Well i'll hopefully update the thread tomorrow to what has actually happened.
Also what engines would you recommened to be a straight fit? Other than 3sge? Or would that be the best bet?
Cheers

Depends how deep your pockets are, a replacement 3S-GE would be the cheapest option, alternatively you could do a turbo 3S-GTE or 3VZ-FE V6 swap but each of those will cost considerably more.

If you want an idea of cost give Woodsport a call.

Thanks for that. Woodsport have an excellent website might try them in the future.
Still trying to work out the problem. However oil was quite low could this fine it down to where the problem lies. Heard this from another forum about noise rattling.

"There is a design fault with the rev1/2 engine where the same thing can happen with low oil. Due to the design of the sump, if the oil level is too low and you go round a corner enthusiastically, then the oil will drain away from the big end bearings resulting in cooking them"

Possibility? Thanks

That is not a design fault. You have to keep the right amount of oil in the sump of any engine or it will be damaged

Take the sump off and check the main and big end bearings

Hahaha. This man's absolutely right, as per. The 3SGE is an engine with (for its time) and incredibly high bhp/litre output, so its tolerances are a little higher than a Fiestas.
