These cambelts are self tensioning during fitting though... then you lock them off, how does anyone end up with an overly tight belt?

james123 wrote:Right well I'm getting a the use of a timing light this weekend so I'll check it then... I've made sure the timing marks are all right so is the dizzy.. Problems are, black and white smoke coming out of exhaust, poor mpg, and there's a high pitched whine when it's running not sure wheres it's coming from tho! Other than that it runs and pulls nicely!! I can't find any leaking hoses when I had a quick look today

Is your EFI sensor still not doing anything? It'll cause your car to overfuel if its not connected/or not working.

Black smoke indicates overfuel, hence poor MPG

White smoke can indicate ethelene glycol being burnt

Hope not that :!:

Update time... Noticed the little metal pipe on top of the tvis manifold had cracked... Taped it up and thats solved the poor mpg and black smoke, the whine is still there tho, tired running the engine without the belt to make sure it wasn't the alt or anything but it's still doing it I'll try the cambelt when I've got the timing light this weekend!!

I assume you didn't run it without the belt for very long...as the belt powers the water pump....

Oh right, i bounce the tensioner a few times to take up any slack in the rest of the belt but always let it relax to the correct spring tension before locking it off, it's not good having it tight.

Exactly what happened to me 3 years ago on a trip to southern france. Silly peugot mechanic wouldn't look at it, no toyota shop nearby so insurance towed it 500km home.

Got 2 extra days out of it + a first class train ticket home from paris.

Replaced it with a rubber hose once I got home. 8)

I also got the inlet cam 180deg out, it was blowing flames out of the intake and for some reason wouldn't start #-o We all learn from our mistakes.
