From the red light, I put in £40 on saturday of Sainsbury's super unleaded - not sure if this is 99 or 97ron @ £1.359/litre and I got back a huge 287 miles!
That equates to 44.3 MPG
The car felt so much smoother. I can definitely justify spending an additional £2 on super!
On normal unleaded I have been averaging for the last 18 months 38 MPG.

Think thats what's known as a win win situation Alex

And i get better with shell v-power over sainsburys super and tesco's momentum, and this being the case i still maintain shell is the bet fuel, although i have never tried BP as there isnt a BP garage near me. I couldn't imagine 44mpg from my mr2 i think i averaged about 23, but then when taking the engine out/apart both manifolds were loose and things were only finger tight....

Fingers crossed your re-built engine should be lots better in several ways Alex

23MPG??? You're engine must have been tom tucked!
I averaged at least 215 miles a tank when I was ragging it before the HG blew up.
Tesco's momentum is BP petrol.
Yes that was the last tank before it blew ones before that ive recoreded 16mpg.
Cecil on the standard ecu i understand it can be chipped, if not an aftermarket ecu at allows remapping will allow fueling chnages.

Surely alarm bells were ringing when you got such poor MPG? Did you not think there must be a problem? I got more mileage out my mates rex than that!
Well my mates rex on full boost drinks a litre of fuel a min.
I didn't really know what to expect fuel wise, i mean its a high reving engine and im pretty sure at 7k rpm it uses alot, and tbh im not really complaining about it i would be if i couldn't afford it but i could at the time. So i take it thats bad fuel consumption then?

From an MR2 NA, I would expect 28-30mpg in normal driving around town.
If you are boring and can cope with dealing with driving at 55mph or so, then you can see up to 42.9mpg which was my record driving back from JAE one year (long story).
Generally sitting around 70-80mph then it would return around 35mpg or so. That's what I got in the NA MR2's I had.
Currently I average 28mpg around town in the AE86 and 34mpg on a run sitting at a genuine 120 km/h.
