Insurance advice, 2nd car, classic policy.

Post by AndyA »

I'm in the process of recommissioning my Mk1 (been in storage for a while) with a view to MOTing it & returning it to the road soon.

I rang Adrian Flux for a quote on Saturday (currently insure my everyday car with them) & was quoted £245, which I thought was a bit steep...

This was for a limited mileage of 3000 a year, with the car kept in a garage. The car is completely standard, bar some aftermarket 14" alloys same size as originals. I'm in my mid 30's, clean licence, no accidents.

Can anyone recommend other companies to try?

Thanks, Andy :thumleft:

Give Footman James a try. That's who I'm insured with and I have all the usual perks. 0 no claims (all used on my Golf), limited milage, agreed value, lots and lots of mods declared... comes in at £300 give or take a couple of quid.

This is a good thread on the Mk1 club for quite a few comparisons.

Problem seems to be that when you start an additional policy a lot of insurers don't give any credit for any existing NCB you may have on other policies.

I have two policies both with full NCB but I fully expect to be fleeced when my MR2 returns to the road and I need a third.

Just to update, Houghtons gave me the best deal, around £130 for the year.

This was for a 2nd car classic policy, 3000 miles a year.

The guy I dealt with, Rob, was very helpful and friendly, and didn't try to push the policy on me there and then when I initially got the quote, unlike my insurer for my main car (Adrian Flux) who were also the most expensive.

Houghtons definitely recommended, will be going back to them for a quote when my main car is up for renewal too :thumleft:

Yes, thanks for the heads up :)

Have left them feedback in the Trader section as well.

Thanks also to everyone who made suggestions too, it's always worth ringing round a few for comparisons!

what kinda milage are you being quoted for 2nd car classic, and do they allow mods?

I've gone with Admiral this year as they now do a agreed value classic car discount. The policy still collects NCD and still allows me to drive any other car third party. I pay just over £300 for the year (5k miles) with filter, exhaust and suspension mods.

In october i'll also be adding the financee's Tigra as they've already agreed a multicar discount also.

just got a quote in the post from classicline,

£387 - 3000k a year with exhuats, alloys and air filter. Going to call them up as I do have an alarm, its a 2nd car, and hopefully adding my old man on the insurance might bring it down.

Good things is its the only classic insurance that lets you have a NCB (not sure if this is true). Still going to try other places.

@Unleash, thats a pretty good price for a standard policy. if I can get it under £400 under a normal policy i'd go for that to build the NCB. If its classic, I really want to be looking at under £250'ish.

I have them on my list to call next week.

Also going to try Admiral multicar as I have my main car is with them. Only thought of that now as I only recently have used them, hopefully they can do me something similar to Unleash.
