Removal of Heater

Afternoon all,

removing my heater and associated gummings along with it, beofre i do has anyone done this and its there / where are the pipes i need to block up

Isn't that an MOT failure if you do this? You need a way of de-misting the windscreen.

Once I'd taken out the heaters I rerouted one of the pipes to look like this.... Cant 100% remember what it looked like before and how I did it


I THINK if you are keen you can go even further and trace those 2 connecting ends right back to the engine bay and join them there. Saving a bit more weight. I havent done that yet so not 100% sure it can be done or if its safe etc.

Once the heaters are gone you'll end up with a big gap like this in your interior....

Definately not an MOT failure, least I've never failed for it on the other cars I've done it to...but my local MOT garage is friendly

The way the pipes are routed around the engine in the engine bay makes by-passing the pipes to the matrix a doddle- I just did this on my car this evening, I'll take you some pic's tomorrow evening and post em up

Right...heater matrix by-pass:

You should recognise these pipes that go to / from the heater matrix, they run down the middle of the car above the fuel tank, AKA the hoses (or pipes) from hell:



They connect to these rubber pipes on the engine, the lower pipe then runs to a hard pipe that is bolted to the top of the gearbox:



You need to unbolt the hard pipe from the gearbox, and remove it from the rubber hose that goes round to the intake side of the engine, leaving you with this pipe- I have inserted a metal tube to act as a connector and retightened the clamp:



I have then used a spare corner section of rubber tube like this:



Remove the upper pipe from the engine (the one that didn't have the hard section on the gearbox), and use the small corner section to link from where this upper pipe was to the section that runs to the inlet side of the engine:



Job done...I've not run with it like this yet, but can't see any reason why it shouldn't be fine- if anything just a little less strain on the water pump, and less water in the car so less weight...and no pipes from hell, or heater matrix...so again less weight

its all about saving weight, less stuff in the car means the car is faster

You'd be surprised how much weight is within all that stuff. Everyone says it weighs nothing, well they couldn't have removed theirs then. There is a fair bit of weight once everything has been taken out (controls, heater matrix, aircon matrix, the fan, all pipework etc)

Every little bit adds up. The heaters & associated piping are plenty of extra weight that can be lost for dedicated track & drag cars.

when one of my mate took out all his AC stuff think he said ti weighed in at over 25kg, thats like a 1/3 of an average sized adult lol

Can't remeber the name- it was a small german one from Vehicle Wiring Products. I'll be honest- it's not great, it does demist the screen ok- but ideally you'd probably want two of them to do the whole screen properly in mid winter...and to keep warm!

Ok, cheers for that. Winter is my mod/rebuild time anyway, so don't need to worry about getting cold
