[Mk2] [Turbo] HKS gt3040 vs GT30

Post by sjm1984 »

i have the oppertunity to buy a hks GT3040 turbo kit for my Rev 3 tubby to complete my forge build and have my goal of 400+ hp.

can anyone tell me the veriations of the HKS GT3040 turbo compared to the GT3071r i was originally planning on getting?

Pros vs Cons?

Im running a hks 3037 pro-s and that made me 406bhp at 1.45 bar with 2 degs of ing timing pulled as i wanted to be extra safe on the dyno

I run 1.6 on the road so no idea what its kicking out at that but its great fun........ great spool up as well. Ryan could not belive how quick it spooled 8)

Where you running standard internals for a while if so how long did you run on the larger turbo?

I was running the TD06 on standard internals at 1.2 bar for about a year then a piston ring cracked (not that u could tell as the car ran fine). I'd done about 6 track days and 2 trip 2 the ring in that time :-)

So I got some forge piston fitted & the gt3037 and then had a re-map & that's it really. The gt3037 spools quicker and has more of a hit but then I'm running more boost now so it's hard 2 put the 2 against each other. But spool wise it's a lot quicker than the td06.........I'll see what the new set up is like next Saturday when I do the 1/4 & handling at elvington :-)

I run a GT30/40 but only have my old Greddy T67 to compare it too...

This Hybrid is essentially a GT30 Turbine with a GT35R Compresser... I have a link somewhere that has the tech data. Will dig it out but not sure if it will help with the HKS stuff? Let's see :)

The numbers on these turbo's are always a pain in the a55 !!

I run a GT3040R on mine... the numbers signifying GT30 bearing housing with a GT40 compressor.

Basically, its a GT3040 is a GT3082 and on the scale of things, the latter numbers signifying the size of the compressors fitted... this being the largest part of the compressor ( hidden ) not the inducer size.

GT3071
GT3076
GT3082

Its the largest of the GT30 range, can give you the punch potential of 600 bhp, but like everything else, dependant on turbine A/R will depend on what power and where the power is.

So in summary... you hear a lot of engines running GT35R's now... these are basically GT3582 turbos...... the GT3040 or GT3082R's run the same compressor with a smaller turbine = faster spool than the GT35R's

jj Thanks for the Info

I think i'll go for the Gt3071 kit instead as the Gt3040 is more than what i need from a turbo just to give me 420hp

This is not mine, but it does inspire me to start welding some pipes together !!

sjm1984 - 3071 Is a good choice in turbo for the street, sometimes I dont envy getting caught out off boost !! :-k Larger frame turbo just need a different style of driving ! :thumleft:

Depends if your wanting 420fwhp/whp and on what fuel you plan to run on. A larger turbo will always get you there easier at the expense of some spool.

Just to run your normal momentum 99 (tesco) or V-power.

it will be driven on the weekends only as i have a daily VW polo and i work in the city.

420ish fly running wolfkatz 870 kit should be enough fuel?

Yeah you'l have enough fuel.

For that power for a road car, i would personally go with the 3082. You'l achieve the power at a lower boost level and sacrifice very little spool time. Also has alot more on the top end should you wish to push it later down the road.

The joy of choosing turbos eh!

P.s. Check out MR2OC.com for dyno graphs to compare the 3071 and 3082's.

i run a Garrett gt3076 63 trim awsome turbo :thumleft: & 800cc sard injectors ,last time it was mapped had to abort the mapping for oil pressure reasons but see 450hp torque should of been more near the 400lbft ,will have to see what it does when its mapped again :-k
