the rough running mk1 continues!

Post by blueninja66 »

afternoon guys, as a few of you may be aware, my mk1 has been "laid-up" due to the cambelt tensioner going pop last summer.
now, the belt and tensioner have been replaced along with the dizzy (as we first thought this was the problem) and it runs!
when i say "run" i mean its sluggish and irratic when idling, i had it mot'd yesterday and suprise suprise it fails on the emmisions.
the emmission readings are really high (i dont have them to hand) and my mechanic is currently scratching his head in despair.
i just called him to ask for an update, which is that its showing a coolant sensor issue from the ecu code. does this tie in with it running rich?
what should i replace next?
am i wasting my time?
has it bent a valve afterall?

any help would be greatly appreciated guys, its been off the road for too long now................its begging to be driven!

If the codes are coming up with that sensor error I'd def change the sensor and check the wiring to the sensor as well.

I may have a sensor somewhere. :-k

Also check that the timing belt's and dizzy are installed correctly as it's quite easy for them to jump out by a tooth.

The engine coolant sensor is attached to a pipe that comes out of the end of the cylinder head (gearbox end). It's under the fuel lines.

I try to have a dig in the garage this evening.

I would check the timing again, its very easy for the exhaust cam to jump a tooth when putting the belt back on.

Get the bottom pully to TDC then check the inlet and exhaust cams line up correct. Also make sure he has used a timing light to setup the dizzy.

Be careful ordering your coolant temp sensor, they are different for Mk1a or b, the plug is a different shape.

Found a coolant sensor last night, yours for postage (PM me your address).

If it's not right just post it back to me. Should be easy to check as the 2 types have different connectors.

Yes - duff info from the temp sensor will make the ECU 'think' the engine is still cold, so it will richen the mix
