[Mk2] [Turbo] Thermostat

Post by daveslater3110 »

Howdy chaps. Does anyone know where the thermostat housing is on a rev2 turbo? My mate did tell me, but I can't see it. Has anyone got a photo? Also will a rev3 thermostat fit a rev2? If not which one do I need, cos place that I rang to order said there's two different types and to bring me old one in to get a match, but don't wanna do that cos it's not really practical!! Plus I don't know where it is yet! Lol.

Thanks in advance guys. Dave.

thermostat sits beside the oil dipstick. Rev2 unit is the smaller of the two

Rev1/2 or Rev3?

Its pretty easy on a Rev3, just one bolt to move the dipstick and two on the thermostat housing.

Takes about 15 minutes.

I replaced the coolant when I did mine, that was more hassle tbh.

The bu88er on the Rev2 is the bolt on the underside of the thermostat housing. I'm sure a Rev2 owner will be along shortly to give some advice on how its best tackled.

fitteed the thermostat. had to remove the oil filter. just had enough room to get the spanner on it. wierd thing is that it didnt have a thermostat as half of it was cut away. only enough to keep the coolant thermostat housing. top half of the thermostat was there with the O Ring seal and the bottom bit with spring was not even in there. top half of the thermostat look like it been cut apart.

just putting the coolant in now. any good tips on bleeding it in the system

Yeah I had to remove oil filter an all. Pain in the ar$e, the whole job took me 8 friggin hours, I had some rad flush aswell so had to drain it fill it bleed it twice and aswell as that, I took the dipstick off the thermostat housing to manage to get it out and then trying to bolt dipstick back on I took the dipstick out of it's housing to make life easier...oh no!! Pulled all of it out of the block, then the o-ring at end of dipstick housing fell apart when I wiped it clean, then it wouldn't fit back in properly, so of course it didn't line up right to get bolt back in, so just cable tied the sodding thing for now. It's shaped like a dogs leg so u can't get any pressure on it to push it in, so only lord knows how I'm gunna get it back in once I've got a new o-ring, possibly off with the oil filter again?!

Any ideas anyone? Aren't these mr2's a pig to work on eh?!

Oh and as for bleeding off Dave, go onto mr2oc.co.uk on the know your two section, there's a proper procedure on there mate, you can't just burp it.

Anyways any advice for me on my probs would be much appreciated, think I'm goin mad!!

Regards, Dave. :thumleft:
