[Mk2] [Turbo] intercoolers

Post by neilo666 »

hi

finally decided I want a new intercooler so i can up the boost a little

just basically want to ask if anybody knows if there is a real difference in the so called big brands (greddy, berk etc) and the xs intercoolers off ebay going for 100- 150 quid?

are you just paying £££'s for the expensive names? or are the ebay ones a waste of money?

thanks

you would save yourself a load of hassle by just waiting for a second hand intercooler kit to come along, there was a full berk kit recently for £200 :thumleft:

ive got an xs power intercooler and ive had no problems. they are welded and some do crack, but they are also 500 quid cheaper.
they will both do a good job, better than the stock one.
if you could get a second hand one then get it, but the xs one seems fine for moderate mods.

500 quid for the chance of having to do a simple re-weld?
i know what i'd go for.

the big names are way way overpriced, as with most tuning products :(

Ive had an ebay copy one since christmas and had no problems. Noticeable difference over the standard intercooler.

thanks for all the replies and thats what I wanted to hear lol

not going for too much power and I can weld so shouldnt be a problem

if they are flimsy brackets i could knock some better ones up at work

the newer ones are better. been running one for a few months, no problems apart from a hose blowing off, just needed tightening.

Get some of them Mikalor clamps, they hold down much better :thumleft:

ive got the xs power on mine and so far so good.

my guess as to why intercoolers snap there mounts is because your probs useing hard pipes , standard hoses ie not very flexible ones. and soft (old) engine mounts.

maybe a change to hump hoses and stiffer engine mounts would help,.

ie... the flex in the engine added to the unfexability in the hosses and joins. snap the brackets off.

they snap because they are "floating" intercoolers, basically thoses brackets hold the whole unit and there is a lot of flex etc.., the stock one has a few mounting points :thumleft:

i have a greddy SMIC at the moment but had an XS power one in my old rev 2 the difference between the 2 is definately noticable! but thats not to say the XS one is bad...not at all!!! brackets did snap on my xs one and the pipes did blow off and to be honest didnt seat very well but with a little welding all was good. just to clarify i bought my 2 with a greddy SMIC i wouldnt fork out for one to expensive for the amount of difference

Make sure to add some hump hoses to your piping. Without hump hoses the aftermarket intercoolers have a tendency to rip the mounting brackets off.
