Car pulls to right when acelerating....

Post by RyanRs »

the faster you go, the more noticeable it is. Tracking is A+ spot on using a hawkeye lazer tracker.

For example, say im on the motorway at 60mph, give it some throttle and it pulls to the right , not seriously badly , but enough to feel unstable and be a bit scary. coming off the throttle causes it to return to its normal straight.

I also notice that if i sit on the spot and move the steering 1/2 turns from left to right, i can see the front of the car follow slightly... Ie if i turn the wheel left, the nose of the car will move an inch or so in that direction.

generally the steering feels quite sloppy.

afaik , I have 15 year old bushings f+b and ball joints. all bolts are tight. Im quite sure that its either ball joint wear or 'forward/backward' movement in the bushing rubbers...or perhaps both?

Im quite sure the car remains straight under braking from what i can remember?

Could anyone give me an opinion?
thanks

Are both tyres on the rear the same? If they are odd brands, or depths this is what happens everytime. I have experienced it first hand.

When you did your tracking, did you ensure a full geometry check was done? If you have recently had the subframe out, the Thrust angle could be out. The track on the rear can be perfect, but the thrust angle will still not be correct if the frame is slightly out of alignment.

Are both rear shockers in good order? A sagging strut can cause this too.

Could it not be torque steer? Now I know the drive shafts aren't connected to wheels that can steer (FWD cars) but there must still be a torque reaction due to the unequal length driveshafts?

A simply analogy. If you push your shopping trolley in the middle of the handle it will go straight, if however you push it slightly biased to one side, it will turn accordingly? Being that the front wheels of the trolley can "steer" and you're pushing from the rear......

Just a thought.

Hi , sorry for the late reply, i have only just got back from cyprus! Anyways, Both rear tyres are the same, and same tread. The tracking was done on a Hawkeye full Geo tracker and set up according to my ride height etc.

My shocks are Tien type-flex all round and are 5000 miles new. i have had the rear X-member off while i was building the new enigne, but its all tight and the tracking was done after.

The only thing i have not changed on the suspension side is the bushes and balljoints. The problem does feel to me like something has play in it. I did have this same problem once in an old escort a few years back after clouting a curb hard, it turned out the hole for the ball joint had elongated allowing the hub to move horizontally on the lower suspension arm. It feels similar to this just on a much lesser scale.

One of the brakes might be binding?

hey mate, this might sound daft but it may be your problem, i had a wheel bearing replaced a wee while ago but the thread on the end of the driveshaft was fooked, so the big 32mm nut had loosened off, i didn't notice till i got in the car one day and it really reall pulled, i mean scarily, it felt sooo unstable!!! then when i lift off it would straighten up!!! had a wee inspection found the proble, tightened up the nut and it was fine( until it loosened off again due to the goosed shaft)

anyway, may be worth a look. :thumleft:
