It fixes the symptoms and not the actual problem.
You do that, and you're just moving the symptoms to some other point further down the line (i.e. wearing out other components more).
Hey...that's hardly fair - it needs to go to the guy I bought the car from - I couldn't possibly take the credit for it. There's nee chance I could of come up with anything that genius
Bah, I'm using a bungie rope around the centre console at the moment, it is not too hard to lift it over the stick and I already have another box ready for installation.
We could try out the long 5th mod on the old one afterwards...

One for Paul to answer - the current plan is for Paul to have my car for as long as he needs to do the 'can it be done' bit. If it's not straight forward, then we may need to source a donar gearbox from a late corolla etc - failing that - stock 5th gear replacement it is.
An idea for you,why don't i just do this to a good mk1 gearbox that i have here? Then if it works just fit the new box? That way you can still enjoy your car in the meantime.
Watch this space...parts will be ordered in the next week or so. It's a bit of a gamble for both Paul and me as there's no guarantee the later gears will fit the box - but fingers crossed!! If they don't, I'll have a very expensive paperweight for my desk.
