The 'alternative' 5th gear fix

Post by Fog on the tyne »

Here you go ladies and gents...I mentioned the rather 'clever' fix to 5th gear on my mk1 - I discovered this when changing the gaiter.

It's not something that Mr Woods is willing to copy however (despite the offer of copyright too)

Thanks to Tiny for the help with posting the piccies.

It fixes the symptoms and not the actual problem.
You do that, and you're just moving the symptoms to some other point further down the line (i.e. wearing out other components more).

As soon as Paul @Woodsport has priced the extended 5th gear mod (and made sure it will fit the mk1), then this will all be history.

Hey...that's hardly fair - it needs to go to the guy I bought the car from - I couldn't possibly take the credit for it. There's nee chance I could of come up with anything that genius

A big magnet in front of the stick would do the same job

That was a joke by the way. :thumleft:

Bah, I'm using a bungie rope around the centre console at the moment, it is not too hard to lift it over the stick and I already have another box ready for installation.

We could try out the long 5th mod on the old one afterwards...

One for Paul to answer - the current plan is for Paul to have my car for as long as he needs to do the 'can it be done' bit. If it's not straight forward, then we may need to source a donar gearbox from a late corolla etc - failing that - stock 5th gear replacement it is.

An idea for you,why don't i just do this to a good mk1 gearbox that i have here? Then if it works just fit the new box? That way you can still enjoy your car in the meantime.

Has anyone tried this yet?

My new box went in last weekend, next step, replace the steering rack apparently...

Watch this space...parts will be ordered in the next week or so. It's a bit of a gamble for both Paul and me as there's no guarantee the later gears will fit the box - but fingers crossed!! If they don't, I'll have a very expensive paperweight for my desk.
