Re: Good news & Bad News ??

It's just a pity that your engine may not have lasted very long. My original engine had a slight big end knock at 135k - almost seems like yours has been mistreated Yes, my engine has done less than half the miles yours did Alex It's had some hard work to do on track in the last 3 or 4 years :-k I ...

Re: Good news & Bad News ??

In any case lubrication issues are totally irrelevant to the thread It might do. I may well be wrong but it is my understanding that a thinner oil may well lose more pressure than a thicker one at higher temps. This comprimises the lubrication system and may lead to problems. The symptoms you sugge...

Re: Good news & Bad News ??

I was doing over a tonne twenty on a private road, slowed to 40 and then it happened Temperature went off the scale and I had to pull over. Opened bonnet to hear a hissing/water escaping noise. At first we thought a coolant hose had fallen off but then realised the head had gone and this coolant wa...

Re: Good news & Bad News ??

I don't see how it is avoidable Peter, unless you remove the head, block internals and have it decked Well, I'd like to avoid the catastrophic blowup by taking action before it happens Alex That is the whole point behind starting this thread I've been expecting top of cylinder problems sooner or la...

Re: Good news & Bad News ??

Mayo in the cap is the result of condensation due to short journeys, frequent short starts and lack of getting up to temp etc. Mayo is a mixture of oil and coolant  Probably the result of the well known top of cylinder damage to which the 4AGE is prone 10 mile test run today at town speeds: Ab...

Re: Good news & Bad News ??

What exactly are you doing with your car Peter? Do you race it, sprint it etc? Small amount of local running & testing Lauren Otherwise track & competition I'm happy with the Mobil oil. No plans to change at the mo. After re-dipping several times am satisfied that any oil loss is minimal BU...

Lauren wrote:Sounds a bit thin oil for a 4AGE. That'd explain why you are using more.

10-40 or 50W is more suitable.

I agree Lauren :)

If I was using it as a normal road car I would use recommended grade

I have automatic transmission fluid in the g'box for similar reason :D

Re: Good news & Bad News ??

My old mk1would always burn a bit of oil and have mayo in the cap at times, especially in wet humid conditions. I have Mobil1 (0w30) in it at the mo. Chris Perhaps that is escaping round the piston rings more :-k Will keep closely monitoring the oil & coolant now & test the compressions

Car passed MoT last week & is performing very well at the mo. BUT Have found a small amount of mayo inside the coolant cap  And the engine oil level is slightly low #-o Will check compressions ASAP Have a nasty feeling that the well known top of cylinder problems are starting 60K miles fro...

Disagree - emails tend to be quite informal especially for this kind of thing, and media production companies typically have quite a youthful workforce. I'm probably too old school for things that happen in the 21st century :-k I expect folk to behave formally and "properly" like this cha...
