[Mk2] [Turbo] how to set valve clerance.

Post by mr2daj »

this is on a celica gt4 st205 which i believe is the same as a rev3 mr2 turbo. i have a slight top end rattle only when warm from what sounds like 1 tappet. u understand it uses buckets and shims and i know that i have to check the gaps off the lobe. i also think i have the clearances which differ from exhaust to inlet cams. after checking i will have to remove the timing belt and cams and fix the ones which are not correct.

what i don't know is how do i remove the bucket? where do i get the correct shims? is there anything special i need to do or have i missed anything out?

st205/rev3 engines use a shim under bucket i believe, which means the whole bucket has to come out, which is a cams and timing belt off job, if i'm wrong look at this, im about to pick one up to do mine(rev2 3sgte)

Did a write up for my forum a while back, but its crashed so I cant link you to it. Will hopefully be back up soon.

You basically need to take the rocker cover off, and with a feeler gauge measure the existing clearances on all 16 valves, then measure the existing shims for each of the valves.

Compare your findings to what’s listed in the Toyota workshop manual and then do some maths to work out what size shims you need to bring it into tolerance where it’s out.

Obviously to change the shims / measure the existing one the cams will have to come out of the head.

Toyota sell the shims, which are about £4 each. You obviously need to advise them of the thickness, or if you ask around you might find someone with a few spares kicking about. IIRC I have a small collection for the Rev3 head.

To get the bucket off, go and buy a valve lapping kit from Halfords. The kit has a little stick with a suction cup on the end of it which you use to the lap the valves. It’s also great for suckering onto the top of the bucket and pulling it out of the head. The lapping kit is on £4 or something.
