[Mk2] [NA] Identifying an import and rust protection

Post by goaferboy »

I'm just wondering if its possible to tell if a car is an import by looking at it. I am off to look at one on saturday and I have the suspicion that it is an import but its not advertised as one. Is there any way to tell by looking at a photo of it?

Image
Rear foglight placement makes it look like it was added later to fit UK requirements?

It was made in late 1993 but its a 3rd revision. Did we get 3rd revision in 93?

Bear with my basic knowledge of mr2s, I've only been researching them for a week or so.

Plus, what is the rust protection like on imported 2nd gens? I heard that they don't salt the roads over there so will it have less rust protection?

Thanks, Luke.

Hi mate that is an import.

You are right the fig is a give away but also the rear number plate is a giveaway. Square plate is a jap import.

sorry I don't know much about the rust protection.

hiya that certainly is an import,
the square number plate (as said above) is a giveaway also the fog light mounted on the rear bumper :)

cars in japan are not rust protected due to not using salt on the roads,
you may want to find out if the car has been undersealed since it has been on uk soil, waxoyl is the good stuff ;)

Hi easy way to identify an import is to look for the TOBELERONE side repeaters at the edge of the nose cone. as in your pic. uk ones are set further up the wings. also all turbos are imports as they were never officially brought to europe. Having jap writing all over the sunvisors is a bit of a giveaway as well

Thanks for the help guys. The car has history so I will check for rust profing. Its low mileage so I guess it was only used in good weather anyway so hopefully rust won't be an issue.

So its this definately a 3rd revision? I assume they got it before we did?
