[Mk2] [Turbo] some rather alarming belt screeches! ideas??

Post by jimGTS »

after a hard run yesturday, (kent coast run organised over on the OC), at idle and very low speeds, on the odd occasion, i developed a really quite loud screeches, really loud, that increased as revs increased...definatly alternator....but worried if its not the belt, could it be anything else....???
it totally disappears when giving it a bit of gas and when im driving more than 10mph, but its really rather loud, and id like to get it sorted....

what sort of job is changing the belt??? is it engine mount off (support the sump with a jack type thing).....what sort of price for the belt....

belt is about a tenner and takes 20 mins to change , need a 12mm spanner and a 14mm spanner , could just try and tighten it first

loosen off the 14mm bolt the alternator pivots on and then the 12mm bolt whcich comes out sideways .
then the 12mm bolt which faces the rear bulkhead tighten that until the belt can only just be twisted through 90 degrees along its longest run and retighten the other 2 bolts

no need to remove anything all easily accesible from the top except pivot bolt but you can get to that without jacking or removing wheel .

Unless you have aircon as the aircon belt is in the way.

ok, replaced the belt, zero screechs now, sweet!
however, i did notice that i appear to be missing the pivot bolt!!

i only undid 2 bolts to get the old belt off and new belt on...and i couldnt feel the so called "pivot" bolt, that is under the alternator pulley......

guess i should be ordering one of those????

To get at the pivot bolt you need to take the wheel off.

Thinking about it i thought i you have to undo the pivot bolt to get the belt off and on.

I need to sort mine out as well. Its just started doing this. Makes your car sound like a peice of crap when driving past people slow or sitting in traffic

My brothers Focus used to do this untill he sprayed some WD40 on the belt, is it safe to do this with the MR2 or should I tighten it first ?

I imagine the wd40 is just allowing the belt to slip more freely, not good.

Try and tighten it, not a hard job at all really.

Is it a common prob with the MR to have these pivot bolts work loose?, cos ive nearly lost mine a few times. I only notice it when you get that awful noise. Oh and the WD40 not a good thing makes the sound worse after a while done it myself lol. Also when replacing the belt make sure its completely in line with the wheels. I found with my N/A that if its a tooth out on one wheel it does the screetching sound when damp/wet.

its strange, cause the horrible, and i mean horribly load screech has completely disappeared, which is GREAT....
just this pivot bolt....really needed?? i couldnt actually feel what the alternator was bolted to even if i did have the pivots bolt?

im guessing it hasnt been on there for a while...alternator still feels very much locked on and in place and isnt moving anywhere.....

Mine was screaching and squeeling when i came off the motorway sounded terrible , got the bits off and found AGAIN the bottom bolt to the alternator has come out and gone missing. 3RD time now , these are Toyota Items why the **** do they keep coming out?

I did them up VERY tight , my old man had a go and even he felt it was good and tight but no , it went missing
