[Mk2] [NA] 16" Wheel Tyre Sizes

Post by jonnie »

Hey,

I'm looking at picking up a set of new wheels for my Red Rev 3.

16" Rota Grids in white:

or 16" Team Dynamics Pro Race 2 in white:

I've been trying to get quotes, and Ben from Driftworks has asked me what size tyres I'd like.

I'm not really sure how the tyre sizes work, or what would be best for my car.

I've noticed some people have big fat back tyres, or are the wheels bigger as well? What sizes should I be looking at, and can someone please explain all the numbers to me?!

Cheers.

Ive got 16's on and im running 205/50 at the front and 225/50 at the rears. My last MR2 also ran the same set up.

The only thing id say is the 50 profile looks slightly chunky and not low profile enough. Ideally id go for 45 profile but then you would need the car to be lowered to get the full effect.

Edit: 205 or 225 is the width. 50 is the tyres profile ie.the visible thickness from wheel rim to tread and obviously 16 is the diameter of the wheel.

Hey Jonnie.
You dont say what size those wheels come in.... are they staggered? If you want to go wider than a standard 225 on the rear (thats the tyre width in mm) then you'll need a wider rear wheel than a standard 7". As you decrease the tyre profile (or height.. expressed as a percentage of the width ie 225/50 means the sidewall is half as tall as it is wide) you need a wider rim for it to sit on.
Pop along to carbibles.com and look through the wheel and tyre section, loads of great info there.

Pretty sure that for the fronts you'll need 205/45/16 and for the rears it's 225/45/16

I've just spent last night looking at new 16" and Rota don't make any staggered 16"'s the offests are also an issue.

Infact the cheapest 16" staggered with the correct offset I found were compomotive, competition wheels at £190 each for rears and £179 each for fronts.

another factor is the use, daily driver, show car, track weapon? depending on what your use is your needs will be more specific, i've got rev 3 wheels with staggered tyres for when it needs to go good and white compomotive MO1665s which are the same all round for when i want it too look good

Rota do the GRID in 16x7 and the DRIFT GRID in 16x8, but the 8" wide ones are dished.
