In Garage for last 10 years

Post by RichardMorgan »

Hi there,

Not too sure if you can help me but we have owned the 1986 MK1 for 13/14 years but, unfortunately she has been in the garage for the last 10 years out of harms way.

I am now in a position to get her ready and get back out on the road and wondered if you had any helpful hints or point me in the right direction to starting her up (last done ~5 years ago) and the basics to look at whilst returning her to her former glory.

I am a "technical virgin" and although she turns over she will not fire up. Do I follow the Haynes Manual or is there anything else you would suggest first? Bump start or is this blasphemous!

Any help would be gratefully received.

Many thanks in advance, Tim Grimmett

first thing to check would be do you have a spark?
standing for so long earth points could be corroded, without a good earth then you wont get any spark
also have you put fresh petrol in? it does go "off" and is unlikely to burn too well after 10 years

also some good tips here for pre start up of an engine that has been standing for a while

Hi Tim,
I've stored a few cars in the past. To get them running I usually -

1. fully charge the battery or get pair of jump leads ready.
2. remove spark plugs & spin the engine to build up oil pressure under no load. Check for spark with a plug connected & earthed at the same time.
If no spark, then start checking ignition side - connections, clean, etc.
3. Replace the petrol with fresh stuff if it's been more than a couple of years since it last run
4. on carb engines I spray some of the easy-start spray into the carb intake. It smells like ether and is more volatile than petrol. It's usually in Halfords, etc, but don't confuse it with wet-start or wd40-type things. You could try removing the air filter and spraying in the intake. Incidentally, that will usually get it running long enough to run on old petrol although it might not run well.
5. If that fails then I check for fuel delivery. Modern petrol does tend to evapourate and leave residues which can block carbs & I suppose injectors. It certainly clogs the accelerator pumps in webers.

after that - check the clutch hasn't stuck ! If it has I usually warm up the engine for a while, depress the clutch with a stick & leave overnight. If that doesn't do it, get the rear wheels on axle stands & free, warm up and then run the engine in gear, depress clutch & brake at the same time. That always works, and is safer than just driving the car until it frees up.

This could also be down to the fuel pump I have a mk1a which is doing exactly this and I have checked all of the above and I think this is down to the pump has seized due to lack of use etc

For what its worth mine (also an 86) sat for about 8 years between 1995 and 2003 before being ferried off to Paul Woods for a generous helping of TLC. Paul had so much trouble starting it he ended up changing the injectors because they were so gummed up.

He also did lots of other stuff and left it looking as good as new. So if you're looking to get it back to its former glory he's worth considering.

Before that I had the starter sieze on two occasions when it had been sitting for a while.

Its been sitting again for a couple of years now so no doubt I'll have more fun and games whenever I next get to see it.

Hope you get yours back on the road.
