[Mk2] [Turbo] HELP !! Power Issues, Advice Needed. Alternator Change,

Post by copie »

Story so far !!
Picked up my new mr2 had to jump start it as was completly dead. So got it home and put on charge and all was fine did a couple of jobs to the car and was dead again so once again jumped started and went for a little drive on way back realised it was dying so kept rev's up and got home.

Decided i would buy a new battery, it arrived next day fitted it and all was great. Drive fine. Couple of days later went to start and was having problems, fuse had gone in enigine bay, but finding this out i drained the battery, So then were at today .

Double checked the fuse that had blown was ok, so jumped started it, started and ran sweet, disconnected the jump pack, and put volt meter across battery and the power is going down from 14v quickly till it died

So must be the alternator, so check the voltage coming out of the alternator, says 12v then it hits me the power is coming back to the alternator from the jump pack, so follow the cable from the alternator to the fuse box and disconnect the two large white wires bolted down in there which is covered by red cover. Was this the correct cables ????

It then read 1.2v coming out of the alternator. Have i done the correct thing and does this sound like it is shagged.

This is a MR2 Mk2 Rev 2 Turbo with air con. (1992/1993)

If it is shagged my plan is to borrow the alternator of my MR2 Mk2 Rev 3 Turbo with air con. (1994) will it fit, would like to try and do this on saturday, so any advise would be greatful. Ive done the search for changing the alternator and there are some great step by step advise from people, so will be using them.

Also what is the score with the "ALT" fuse in the front fuse box, is this for the alternator, i took it out and read the voltage coming in and there was nothing there.

Im getting well confused. Please help .

Thanks Steve.

Steve, with the engine running and a 'good' alternator you should see around 13.8 volts across the battery.

If you see less than this (and especially less than 12v) then you've almost certainly got a dead alternator.

They're a bit awkward to remove/ refit, search back here for advice and tricks on removing and refitting them.

Cheers,

Ben.
