What brake fluid is best?

Post by Deano2915 »

Just upgraded from rev1 to rev2 brakes. What's the best grade brake fluid to use?

Dot 4 or Dot 5.1

Personally I think for most road use Dot 4 is more than adequate.

I'm a fan of Castrol SRF or Motul RBF600.

These chaps are generally well priced - http://www.opieoils.co.uk

Any dot 5.1 is best as it boils at a higher temperature than dot 4.

Not always exactly true but a good generalisation I guess ;)

A basic 5.1 won't outperform a good 4 - take Motul RBF600 as an example, it's a 4 that's rated higher than most 5.1s.

There is a lot of confusion over 5.1, people tend to reference it with DOT 5 with is a silicone based "race" fluid, it's just a glycol-based fluid like the DOT 3 and 4 types but generally boils higher.

Take each fluid on it's personal spec and read the labels, for the sake of a few quid get the best you can, it's important stuff :)
