I have to give up my lovely MK1

Post by Soupasam »

:pale: I never thought it would come down to this! I'll be heading off to Uni this saturday and i've thought of everything to justify taking my MK1.

After using it as my daily driver for 10 months and spending too much money on it, I've only got 4 days left of driving it :(

I'll be lending it to my brother for the 5 years of uni on the condition that he keeps it on the road. I'm expecting to come back to find it in bits!

The sad thing is, I get withdrawal symptoms, when I haven't driven it for a couple of days  Not sure how i'm gonna cope!, is there a support group or something?

You done the right thing making sure he keeps it on the road mate, if I had to part with mine I couldn't bear the thought of the next owner breaking it on Ebay or something.

Just get back on the weekends and rev the hell out of it, the car feels even more special when you don't drive it everyday, trust me.

It was either lend it to my bro or sell it, he has promised he'll weld the rear arches up as they're a bit rusty now. \:D/
The worrying thing is, he's already talking about doing trackdays #-o

On the bright side, I couldn't think of a better situation than someone capable of their own welding looking after it

Good luck with Uni!

I'm a uni student and run a mk1.

Stupidest decision EVER! Concentrate on your studies mate and when you graduate you'll be in a position to buy many a mk1.

what you going to study and where?

I got my mk1 when I got back from uni, although I managed to insure a grp 14 Punto GT ok.

Definately not worth having a car in your first year, but at least you can reconsider and have it back if you need to.

I managed to self destruct and kill; a crappy Nissan micra, a thirsty wobbly Volvo 360GLE, and a MK1 XR2 while at uni. mainly paid for by PT jobs and loan. My point is i needed em for work and glad i kept with it, but sad I allowwed my XR2 to rot so much. If i had a pride and joy MR2 now and were goin to uni with a more mature head i'd keep it and take it with me. A tricky situation cos they zap money and it may get neglected due to to much fun/study not enough £. :-k Good luck with it all anyway...

:)

PS if any students are quibbling official insurance at ya accomodation, try Endsleigh, was insured on a 2 litre Volvo at 21 in inner city Leeds at a fair rate ;) not an ad BTW they actually do heavy discount students. (i know mad isnt it!)

Tried them a couple of years ago and they weren't competetive, they even have a branch on campus! Just did an online quote as I need to renew in a week or two...Bell are saying £600 FC, + Drive Other Cars,+ Windscreen + Legal. Chris Knott say £476 TPFT Basic, and Endsleigh say £1100+ TPFT basic! Not so good for me unfortunately :(

Hmm yeah, :thumleft: well when i bought the XR2 I had to be creative with it being insurance group 14, endsleigh were OK on quote, but still too much, a bit too hot for student travel me thinks. So I 'moved home' ;) and went with the cheapest half ass'd company i could find. I had to have that little beast. :D

Im a uni student and ran a mk1 and then a mk1 race car  they eat time.

As for insurance for halls, uni accommodation, you may find it cheaper to extend your home insurance to cover you away!
Mine was an extra £100 on the rents policy which then covered every item taken out of the house, not just my stuff at uni, so say you take your camera out and it gets stolen, it comes under the home insurance. Also this meant the rents paid it :thumleft:

Ensleigh have always sucked big time for me during my student days and the fools kept telling me over the phone it was heavily discounted...

£600 FC sounds good, i live in rubbish London and ive always paid well over the odds...Even today i pay £540 for a mk1 with 4 yrs NCB, clean licence and 25
Dont even wanna go into what i used to pay with a fresh licence!

Forget I said owt, Again I guess they are not competitive on hot cars, just bread and butter Pug 106's etc, however when my GF was at halls last year they all had newer posher cars than me by a long way! :D So New MINI and Landrover Freelander etc probs more accurate!

So idunno, guess most of them cough up, or the rents pay, easy come easy go!

Cheers for all the advice guys!
I'll be off to Birmingham to study Mechanical and Automotive Engineering. I don't really know the city at all so depending on where I live in my second year i'll have a look into insurance etc.
I've been relying on a fleet policy for insurance, which works out at around £500 for the car, regardless of driver age. But I'm not sure if my dad will be too happy for me to stay on his company insurance while i'm off in Birmingham :-k

Its crazy what some students drive when at uni, my mate had an Audi A6 fully kitted up with a massive sound system in the first year, for the 2nd year he had a Audi A4, kitted up, windows tinted even bigger sound system. Then after our year out i come back to uni to find he has a M3 convertible fully kitted, centre exhaust, massive chrome alloys etc...

I had a £500 nova TDI when at uni, didnt get my mk1 till the last year!!

Shame to hear you've had to let it go - though I fully understand... I got my first car when I was on a placement year away between second and third year at Uni - a £100 Pug which I still have today 3 years later. Was (is) great as a student car as dirt cheap in every single way possible. (Should point out here that Endsleigh wanted my left leg to insure this... quote was well over a grand!)
Got the Mk1 18 months ago (before knowing for sure that I'd be coming back to Uni) and 12 months ago started a post-grad course at Uni... It's been tough trying to keep on top of things with the Mk1 financially and time-wise (paricularly the latter as I saved money for 3 years running of the car while I was working before I came back to Uni to cover 3 years of insurance, tax and MOT) but it is possible. Just. However, it makes it extremely rewarding taking it out now, knowing how much work it takes to keep it going... :)

Doing the degree you're doing you're going to miss the Mk1 soon. Though in Birmingham I highly doubt you'll need a car. Mind, I give you three months before you decide the train ticket to come home to visit the parents is too much and you begin to feel you can justify the Mk1 if it means not paying the train companies anymore... ;)
