Updated: IMOC Skidpan Session - 20th October - Northamptonshire

Post by BenF »

Folks,

Following some interest back in July - http://www.imoc.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?t=71970

I've got a couple of dates provisionally booked with the Northants Skid Control Centre ( http://www.skidcontrolcentre.co.uk/ ) as it is a good central UK Location.

For those that haven't done a skidpan event before, it gives you the opportunity to learn about the different types of skid you might encounter driving your MR2 and how to recognise and recover from them. The skidpan surface is a low grip slippery surface, so speeds are low allowing you plenty of time to recognise and correct the skid.

It is ideal if you are looking to enjoy to the full the handling offered by your MR2 and perhaps move on to do some trackdays - or even if you are comfortable with a car moving around, to allow you to hone your skills.

The details of the Skidpan Training are:
  • 3 hours of tuition / Classroom training
  • Use of the Skidpan's own cars
  • Two sessions of three hours, six in each session
  • Sessions start at 9.15am and 1pm, Tea and coffee available there.
Price : £75, Deposit of £35 payable to the Skidpan centre in advance.

UPDATED : Date : Saturday October 20th

If you would like to attend - Post or PM here, first come first served - we de have a second date booked in October if there is enough interest.

Cheers,

Ben

I can't do this month as I'm skint :(

But I'd definitely be up for October (depending on the date) :D

The October session is not yet confirmed, so if you do want to go, the September 29th session is the one to go for.

I've had four other people drop me a line letting me know they may be interested as well.

If we do go with this - the way to handle payments is that a cheque will go directly to the folks running the skidpan.

As for the cars - so long as you can get there, you'll be fine - on the skidpan you'll be using their cars, as tyres with road-legal levels of tread tend to chew up the slippery surface (!)

I'll start a list :

Confirmed :

I can't afford to do the September one unfortunately, but I'll keep my eyes on this thread to see if the October one looks likely :thumleft:

you said you will be using there cars. Are they similar to the MR2 as in RWD mid engined??

If not surely if you got into a skid it would involve a different reaction to say a FWD?? Would they teach you this?

From when I discussed this with them - I'm fairly sure they teach you in RWD cars (usually a Sierra) as well as a FWD car. Other skidpans I've done have also done ABS vs Non-ABS skid control techniques.

The skid recovery techniques are indeed different for FWD and RWD, but the difference between a MR2's mid-engined RWD and Sierra Front-engined RWD in terms of skid recovery is nil.

I'm waiting on a call back from them at the moment - I'll ring and ask them as to which cars they use.

OK,

Just been trying to get hold of the Skidpan folks to confirm the details and I am awaiting a callback confirming their end of the event ..

More info as I get it.

OK, been talking to the Skidpan folks and there looks to have been a mixup during the discussions we had - I had the 29th September down - but they had Saturday October 20th.

Given the feedback above, more people are likely to be able to make October that may not be a bad thing ..

I'll update the first post with the new info.

That's disappointing but it might give you more time to drum up some interest. I'm still up for it.

Date is good for me, and my sister (cheekystarr) has given an interest as well, though I'm unsure if the date is good for her at the moment (she's out the country). She is a premium member on here as well...
