[Mk2] [Turbo] wheel and tyre weights

Post by rookie-racer »

hi all, i've been gathering bits for my project car, and have just weighed my new rims with tyres on them the rears are 235/45/17, and the rims are 9.5J rotas, i just wnat to check how light or lardy these are at 22.75kg inc tyres valves balance weights and center caps etc?

is this a good figure or are they too heavy to improve performance as mentioned in skin the spins article in mr2only

That's pretty heavy.
My Mk1 15" Rotas with 195s are 13kg all in.
17"s will obviously be heavier but that still sounds heavy.

My 16 inch rota grids were 11ish kg a wheel
Standard 15's are close to 15kg if I remember correctly .

come on dude, surely there not 11kg including the tyre if stock is 15kg! youve gone up a height in wheel, heavier tyre than a 15inch tyre also....
:-k
???

its pretty hard to get something thats light than the stock wheels...

standard wheels are 15lbs not 15kgs
this is the best guide on the net for wheel weights

http://www.wheelweights.net/

what sort of rotas are they?
not the lightest wheel about if they are D1's
tyres generaly weigh about the same (give or take a couple of pounds) in the 15/16/17 sizes

I was running 205 45 all round since they came with the wheels and I thought I'd use them up a bit .
But have a look at the spokes on standard wheels compared to grids .
I had to have them weighed for delivery purposes and it was just over 11kg a piece . Makes no odds to me wether you believe that or not, but the wheels are on my sisters car now and if rookie's back up in Scotland he can check that himself . I fitted them to my sisters car, and I felt the difference, although now the rears are wearing better profiles, they still feel lighter then stock,I'd bet my kidney's on it

I meant including tyres, no point just weighing the wheel .
According to that site my rotas were 15lbs as well, but is it front or rears of standard wheels that are 15lbs, since the rears make the biggest difference and would be the heavier ?
They're bloody light and they made a big difference from my 22kg 18 inch wheels , and were a lot easier to run up and down 4 flights of stairs to my house with

22.75kg is slightly on the heavy side for 1 wheel - but I'm sure there are much heavier wheels out there... To be fair they are 17x9.5J which is a fairly large wheel for an MR2. At least you can put some decent width tyres on them if you want :D

I weighed some stock wheels with a digital scale a while back and found a stock 15" front is about 15 to 16kg including tyre - exact weight depends on the tyre brand - I found some bridgestones (almost 10kg)to be about 1kg heavier than the same size 'Star Performer' budget tyre.

Some tyres can be even heavier than the bridgestones too - I weighed my 235/50/15 R888's on the same digital scale at 11KG.

A stock rear wheel is 17 to 18kg - again tyre dependent.

In my mind I always think of a lightweight wheel to be lighter than the original stock wheels when running a similar wheel size or close to the weight of the stock wheels if you are running a larger rim like yourself.

The stock rims are by no means a heavy rim anyway, especially when compared to most average aftermarket wheels \:D/

My Work RS-Beta rear wheels are 16" x 9" and 2.5kg lighter than the stock 15's, same make and model of tyre.
