[Mk2] [NA] New Alternator but still no charge !!

Post by Barney »

Hi

four warning lights appeared on my dash and I was losing battery power, was infomred probably alternator and went to the gargage who confirmed it was and put a new one in. Lovley.

Except the warning lights have come back and the battery is dead again ! Lights would start going out at about 2,000 rpm but then after a while stay on regardless.

What can it be ?

Managed to drive to work today but now flat - what drains it so quick ?

Thanks

Have you got a new battery in there. If not then thats probably causing the problem especially with all the cold weather weve been having. My battery is fairly new and ran flat after 3 days on the driveway. You can get a decent battery for around £40-£50 which will last HTH :D

I was thinking that - but would that explain the "warning lights" ?

Hopefully the garage checked the battery before replacing the laternator at great expense !

How do i tell if the battery I have is dead and is the problem without going to buy a new one ?

I had this and luckily the fella at the garage found it before beginning work on replacing my alternator (not rubbing it in! :? )

Apparently some wires had burnt through and fused together in the back fuse box in the engine bay. He just cleaned and covered them back up and it's been fine since

Check the following fuses:

ALT-SENSING (in front boot)
ECU-IG (in engine bay)

If either one has gone, that is your problem.

Failing that, pull the 3 pin plug off the alternator. One of the wires will be black with a yellow stripe on it. Using a multimeter, check the voltage on this wire with the ignition on and report back.

Thanks for your relies guys.

Sent it back to the garage, seems to be fixed, their explanation was a dodgy alternator replacement.

Seems to be okay at the moment - except now i have a waterfall coming through my t-bar !
