[Mk2] [Turbo] Hi HP Problems

Post by janiK »

I heard that 3S-GTE block could have problems after 450-500 FWHP.
I heard also that weakest point is between 2. and 3. cylinder.
Does anyone have kind of experiences with higher horsepowers in stock gen2 or gen3 block?
Is there any kind of medicine for this kind of problems?
Is there any differences between gen2 and gen3?

RUMOUR is that when the revision 3 first came along there was problem with the castings for the bottom end and this resulted in weaker blocks.

Later cars and definately rev4 onwards were addressed.

This is how ever a rumour as far as I know though?

yeah your right with the blocks, there was a casting issue. its still kind of a lottery though. safest option is to sleeve the block. chat to tim at xxxx about this as he sells then and can give some sound advice. also hes a Chico Race Works dealer who sell some ready built motors.

cheers karam

OK lots of this is rumour and internet fable.

I have never actually heard of anyone had it happen.

usually its down to poor tuning.

I an actally interested to know who has had this happen, and what they were running etc.

It happened to Muhsin mate (aka V8Killer), he posted pics up a while back when his early revf3 bklock cracked!

It sure did! And it wasn't down to poor tuning. Just simply a sh1tty block! I was only running 17psi at the time with a conservative unichip tune with a good intercooler!

Also happened to:

Ian Ashton
Andy @ Fensport
Tony @ Fensport
Adrain @ Fensport x 4 times (testing out strokers)
Simon Warner
Jon Raynor
Joe Whittingham
Scott Barton (www.mr2oc.com)
Ryan Pricer (www.mr2oc.com)

These are just a few of the top of my head. The earlier blocks simply don't have enough material on them between cylinders.

Answering the OP's question...if you want to build a big BHP 3SGTE, start with a late Gen III block and ultrasonically measure the thickness of the cylinder walls just to be on the safe side. Use stock bore size (86mm) and use stock sized pistons...CP are pretty good.

Ah well thats good to see i guess.

However were these engines with stroker kits or large bore pistons as if that is the case the walls obviously become thinner via the boring process.

there are various other issues that come into play aswell though, i.e what was the car being used for when it happened, piston size, boost level, nos being used, etc etc.

i personally run my car with 87mm pistons and oversized valvles, bla bla bla, and i've never encontered any problems in the 3 years i have ahd the car. most of which has had the car running 1.6bar and it gets driven hard on road and track (rev3 block btw)

Thanks for answers! I think there shouldn't be problems.
I have now 0,5mm bigger CP-pistons and power should stay under 500HP. I see power later but no need to go HI pressuress because trying to build perfect circuit toy, not dragrace joy.

You can check my car in garage. Compression pressure going to be something like 8.0-8.5 and there going to be adjustable camshaft gears for more of those parts.

let see what it gives in dyno setting and what happens.

Adrian? I thought Fensport handed out all thier engine building to a trusted third party? Have they starting building units for themselves now?

Its a joke

JEMS RACE ENGINEERING build all the Fensport engines and all engines built through Fensport. Yet to have an engine pop through JEMS RACE ENGINEERING!

Adrian was over in Japan doing business with performance companies and Blitz

Fensport are apperently the official Blitz UK dealers now too. I believe Dino was re-doing the Blitz website for Adrian just before the new year.

Cheers

A company in Hereford was building them originally. BJ Motorsport or something??? They've since had John @ Jems build there engines!

Do you have idea which kind of engine serial numbers those earlier model gen3 has and which numbers start to be rev4 mr2 engines?

My first engine got toasted (other reasons) so there is changed block which is now under construction. I think that it's newer gen3 but can't be sure.
Engine builder told me that it seems very good and he thinks that it's newer gen3 because it arrived from japan little while a go and those normally are.

thing is i've seen cracked walls on blocks on all generation 3sgte's not just the gen 3.

I also don't beleive toyota addressed there problem in the gen4 as they admit there never was a problem to begin with.

Most of the problem lies in the way there cast, i believe there casting process improved on the later blocks and cured the problem at the same time.

From what i've been told fensport's been sleeving there engines for years and putting them down as thickwall blocks in there cars.

LOL ... thats not true. All there past engines have been thick walled block engines. The new one there having built is sleeved, but its there first time they are attempting it!

Tim...who told you that out of curiosity? Am intrigued. Its amazing how bull easily spreads
