I use now 20w-50 kendall GT-1. Example Mobil 5W-40 isn't good option for 3s-g engines, they will eat it like oat meal.

In a 10w-40 for example the 10w bit (W = winter, not weight or watt or anything else for that matter) simply means that the oil must have a certain maximum viscosity/flow at low temperature. The lower the “W” number the better the oils cold temperature/cold start performance.

The 40 in a 10w-40 simply means that the oil must fall within certain viscosity limits at 100 degC. This is a fixed limit and all oils that end in 40 must achieve these limits. Once again the lower the number the thinner the oil, a 30 oil is thinner than a 40 oil at 100 degC etc. Your handbook will specify whether a 30, 40 or 50 etc is required.

This is a quote from oilman....you sure the 3sgte engine will eat the 5w-40 mate? it seems bang on to me and most companies do not do 10w-40 in fully synth only the 5w-40

Toyota recommend 5w-30 usually. so the 5w-40 from oilman seems bang on

what do other people use? Do you lot agree with the above?

BTW silkolene pro 5L delivered to door for £40.00 which i thought was excellent value :thumleft:

Hi peeps is 5w 40 ok to use then?

If not il use it this time and then during summer service go for something with a higher grade.

With the lower the number the better it is a start i suppose this wont matter too much.

I would have thought the 40 number was more relevant to do with oil thickness. have i understood this correct?

£40 is a lot for oil, but I suppose it's relative. We're not driving 1.1L Fiestas here.

Halfords will charge you that for 5L of pretend synthetic. So at least you know you're getting the real deal.

I change mine every 6 months, and usually go for a semi-synth like Fusch. The longevity of fully synth would just be wasted IMO.

I use 5w40 in Winter, and 10w40 in Summer. I don't do trackdays or much extended thrasing - if I did I'd look into getting a w50 I think.

cheers mate, been looking into this all day having spoken to oilman and there are a few people who differ. However having researched i think i will stick with 5w-40 fully synth all year.

Those guys at Opie oils are really helpful and explain stuff in great depth.

worth paying the extra (although £40 is a very good price i think) just for the advice and help of the people.

Top blokes :thumleft:

I would recommend them. hopefully my 5litres will be here in the next few days
