[Mk2 ] Idea for creating room to mount extra gauges

Post by osborne0 »

I have seen photographs for installation of additonal gauges in the dash in various parts of the forums and all seem to either block up the centre vent or move the radio/heater controls to the glove box. How's this for an idea?

As most single din radio/CD players come with a face off, mount just the face off in the dash (or where the ash tray currently is) and solder wires from it to the main unit. This unit can then be locked away (e.g. in the glove box or in one of the boxes behind the seats) with easy access if it's a single CD unit, or located next to the multiCD box if it's a multi CD/DVD unit.

I've no money at the moment for gauges to try the idea out but I was wondering if anyone had tried this before? :-k

I guess it would work but I've not seen it done. I can't say I'd fancy trying to solder wires between the face-off and the main unit either. Why not just get a pillar pod for the gauges?

I'd be impressed if you manage it though! Keep us informed :)

I've seen on guy on a car pc forum doing something similar but it was so he could have the head unit facia remote mounted and a screen for a car pc in the double din space. Apparently it was a real pain, as the soldering needs to be very precise and you'll need to figure the wires. Cool if it works but a real pain... Pillar pod or above the glovebox (often seen on supras and not to everyones taste!) would be easier

i've got one sat in the store room, managed to get one as they were selling out. Was planning on taking a mould of it when time allows.
