How to spit flames?

Post by ioa1980 »

Driving through a local estate t'other evening and arrive at a T junction (prior to this, may I add, I was engaging in a lot of flames and pops and the engine was warm). I pull out of the junction briskly in first and slowly change to 2nd, then where I would normally expect a 'pop'...... BANG
It sounded like a lifeboat flare or a gunshot! REALLY loud I could hear it echoing off nearby buildings.
I stopped about 300m down the road and checked all around the car and everything was alright.
It was a cool, but very damp day.

This brings me on to two questions....

1. What was this 'BANG'?

and the ttle of the thread....

2. what conditions are best for popping?

i.e. fuel type? weather? after accelerating with turbo spooling for a long time/short time?

The pops and bangs are caused by excess fuel being ingnited by a very hot exhaust tip.

 gotta love it havent you, mine pops all the time, but sometimes I get a huge bang changing gear, and friends following said they've seen flames come out of both pipes 8) so cool, and on an NA too with just a decat

The best conditions to making it happen is when the car is really hot, especially the manifold, so like Mark says the unburnt fuel is caught in there which ignites \:D/

If mine is on full boost for ~5+ seconds and easing off (after warming the exhaust) it'll flame. This usually meant only 4th/5th gear ..

The biggest were about 5 foot and about 2~3 seconds long ..

With WI, whatever colour screen wash I was using would tint the flames.
Tried blue, green and red .. blue and red looked cool, green was weird.

I take you mean 'water injection' by WI? If so, I thought they sued there own water supply, it seems odd to use the washer fluid as it would run out quickly and it's premixed (normally) with washer fluid?

That's also how those rice flamer kits work. With a spark plug placed in the exit of your exhaust and running your rich to provoke a fuel rich mixture in the exhaust.

yup Water injection .. they DO use their own supply, but I used premixed washer fluid (it contains methanol, and water) and the halford bottles sit in the wheelarch behind the carpet in the boot perfectly.

No spark plugs needed on the MR2 ..

I was also told small balls of petrol would drip out the exhausts at the same time, leaving little balls of fire rolling down the road behind my car ..

I never got to see it though .. only on some dodgy shakey hand cam.

I used to see the occasionsal flick of flame over the boot on the BIG bursts, and the M'way behind used to glow orange.

Lots of over run seems to make mine bang like a mofo, or alternatively sporadic boosting. Scares the poo out of pedestrians :eye: not sure if i get flames tho

To spit flames, put petrol in your mouth, hold a lit lighter or equivilent ignition source and spit out the petrol, should get some nice flames :D

Or you can just make the car run super rich, mine is moderatly rich and i get good flames out of both exhausts sometimes.

For some reason i thought good popping was due to running lean rather than rich...

do a skywalker and mount a sparkplug in the exhaust.

Mine does not pop or bang etc.

Got a de-cat and exhuast. Its a Rev3 Turbo, which apparnelty is supposed to run a little better than the Rev 1 and 2, which seem to over fuel a bit.

I would assume this would make your pop and bangs and flames.

If you car is running perfectly i wouldnt expect it to pop bang and make flames.

Am i wrong?

No you're not wrong. Mine very rarely makes and pops and bangs or flames.

It's as i said at the start of the thread, excess fuel ignited by a hot exhaust tip.

Mine has never flamed with a twin exit exhaust but with my old single I used to get flames only occasionally.

I've a crappy old dizzy and a corroded roter arm, this should give you a rubbish enough spark to not burn all the fuel.

If that doesn't work i can give you a set of worn out plugs.

so basically, if your flamming all the time, your running to rich and more than likely losing power because of this???
i certainly dont get massive bangs like some i here, like a gun going off......
never noticed flames....
only really get a little pop if changing gear hard, or just fully off the throttle while slowing down....little mini pops..

then again im running a little leaner than most....
