Driving through a local estate t'other evening and arrive at a T junction

(prior to this, may I add, I was engaging in a lot of flames and pops and the engine was warm).

I pull out of the junction briskly in first and slowly change to 2nd, then where I would normally expect a

'pop'.

BANG

It sounded like a lifeboat flare or a gunshot! REALLY loud I could hear it echoing off nearby buildings.

I stopped about 300m down the road and checked all around the car and everything was alright.

It was a cool, but very damp day.

This brings me on to two questions.

.

1.

What was this

'BANG'?

and the ttle of the thread.

2.

what conditions are best for popping?

i.e.

fuel type? weather? after accelerating with turbo spooling for a long time/short time?
